Malaysia to scrap sevens squad
Malaysia is to disband its rugby union sevens squad after a woeful Commonwealth Games showing and will start from scratch for next month's Asian Games.
The Malaysians were beaten 40-0 by Kenya, 61-0 by Samoa and 56-10 by Papua New Guinea in New Delhi and only two players from that showing will be retained for the Guangzhou games, MRU secretary-general Nabil Ahmad Marzuki said.
Malaysian national news agency Bernama reported the decision to disband the squad had been agreed by MRU president Amiruddin Embi.
Marzuki said only Dineshwaran Krisnan and Khairul Azhar Noor would be retained.
New Zealand won the Commonwealth Games tournament - they have not lost a match since winning the first Games sevens tournament in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, then in Manchester, England in 2002 and Melbourne, Australia in 2006.
Rugby sevens has been included on the programme for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
