Hamilton to race Hoy at Wembley

Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton will race triple Olympic cycling gold medallist Chris Hoy around Wembley Stadium next month as a warm-up for the Race of Champions event.

The 23-year-old Hamilton will be at the wheel of a Mercedes road car while Hoy will cycle on a parallel track constructed over the turf of the national football stadium.

Hamilton will also perform a demonstration run in his McLaren Formula One car before he and Hoy leave to take part in the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony in Liverpool.

"This is going to be something very special," said Hamilton, who will not be taking part in the main event against the likes of retired Formula One great Michael Schumacher and rally champion Sebastien Loeb.

"I've done F1 demonstration runs away from race tracks before, but Wembley Stadium's completely different, the atmosphere is going to be crazy. It's going to be a great way to end a fantastic year."

Hoy, who won golds in the sprint, keirin and team sprint at the Beijing Games, doubted he would be able to match Hamilton's Mercedes for acceleration but hoped the tight and twisty track would help him.

"I can kick out about two and a half brake horsepower so that's not going to quite match his car but I think they'll make the race as close as possible and I'll be giving it absolutely everything. I'm really looking forward to it," he said.

The Race of Champions pits competitors from various branches of motorsport against each other in a range of machinery over a parallel two lane track and will be held on December 14.

  7. Hi guys Ace here.
    I have been studying the posts of some of the ppl on this site and have come to the following conclusions based on my IQCalcabase software.
    Pond.Simba, stivsf1, Rav A, mauricechlela, Marnio, Ollieboyyy, J.Bolam and Golf in the Kingdom are the same person. The software, by analysing their posts came up with a mental age of 2 year 6 months. But the thing was they were all within the same Henderson Bounds on the JXY plots - interesting. This means with 99.9999% certainty they are the same sad person.

  10. Strikes me that most of posts on here are about F1. Article is about honouring Lewis and Chris in front of large crowd for what they have achieved. Not sure how Michael Schumaker or anyone else gets into that equation. As for Car v Cycle there are far more similarities than one might think with significant overlapping research going into design and technology to help both Team GB and Mclaren-Mercedes put their riders/drivers in with a chance.
    Whichever way you look at it, its been a fantastic year for Great Britain.

  11. Marnio from Peru, can I just say one thing? Lewis is World Champion so you can cry over your keyboard as much as you want, because it ain't gonna go away. LH World Champion - has a lovely ring to it doesn't it? But let's not forget all the other drivers: they all lost because LH is World Champion, ergo he is a better driver than all of them. Wipe those tears off your keyboard Marnio and go ask Mummy if you can go play outside... P.S. - Lewis Hamilton is the World Champion... :-)
