BMW-Sauber test driver Christian Klien said the interim Formula One car being tried out by the team in Spain this week was the ugliest he has seen.
The German manufacturer on Monday ran two modified 2008 cars on slick tyres and with some of the bodywork conforming to the 2009 regulations, a high and narrow rear wing along with a wide and low front end.
Klien's car was also fitted with the new KERS - kinetic energy recovery system - device that is being introduced next year.
"To me, for the moment, it's the worst Formula One car I have ever seen. It just doesn't fit together," the Austrian told Autosport after the first day at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya.
"But we will get used to it. There will be a lot of modifications until the first race in March."
BMW-Sauber, who finished third overall this year, are due to launch their 2009 car in Valencia on January 20.
"It drives quite well, actually," said Klien of the hybrid version. "There are still quite a few improvements coming over the winter.
"Basically it's quite a lot less downforce but with the slick tyres it compensates quite a lot."
Klien said the rule changes would slow lap times and pose a new challenge for drivers.
"Even with these aerodynamics it's still not possible to drive right behind another car," he said. "We will see in the first few races.
"It's more of a problem to not knock off the front wing at the first corner."

Schumacher was a fantastic racer and driver, there's no doubt of that, you don't win seven world titles by being average no matter how much support you have. BUT he is not THE greatest ever, and much of his success needs to be accredited to other people and luck. At least TWO of his world titles should never have stood (He was let off for ramming Hill at Benetton and there was a strong case for points being deducted from one of his Ferrari crowns following racing an illegal car). On top of that you add his ramming of Villeneuve and parking antics at Monaco and you have the foundations for a very dubious driver to even clain greatest ever. Fangio and Senna may have had their moments, but not like the German had.
Arshad- also, Senna died in Imola, Italy and NOT Brazil. So you get your facts right.
arshad - Sorry mate, but I think Schumacher is nothing but a cheat. Dont forget 1994 when he pushed Damon Hill off the circuit so he could win the championship. And did he get penalysed. NO. The FIA have always been in favour of Schumacher. I wonder if being German has anything to do with it? FIA, Max Mosley, Germans and Italians (There is a connection there somewhere) The whole of F1 has been about and around him. It should have been called the Schumacher championship. Even Barichello has no respect for him. Schumacher always has his way with the team, so they concentrated on designing the car around his driving style and not Barichello's, and with the amount Ferrari spend on F1 it's no wonder he won seven world titles. No one else could stand a chance. You've just fallen for the Schumacher propaganda, like thousands of others.
He wizzo loosen up man. When Big Joe goes to watch Ladies topless mud wrestling he don' wanna watch any ugly @#$% noe does he?
One thing that peeves me is when certain people make comments on the facial looks of drivers. What flaming difference is it if they look ugly or beut, this site is for expressing views on F1 and is not a beauty parade. The fact that you dont put your own facial image on as a comparison says it all.
No. 46 "In the same way as you report racist comments, let us all report 'Marnio from Peru' for its stupidity. Enough of this @#$%."
Not just stupid - libellous. Mosley conceded McLaren had not used Ferrari intellectual property (IP) in the 2007 car and the sanctions imposed on the team included inspections to ensure none was used in the 2008 car, either.
As for stealing it - McLaren didn't. One of its people was (allegedly) supplied with the IP by a disaffected (allegedly) Ferrari employee. Without the knowledge of Dennis & Whitmarsh, as Alonso knew full well - otherwise he wouldn't have used revelation thereof (allegedly) as a threat (allegedly).
Yahoo - block the buffoon's access. He's putting the site at risk of legal action.
smartcaruk, Schumacher is the best ever, better then even Senna who was sensational. And the year Senna died Schumi had won the first two races and Senna had actually flown off the track at home in Brazil while trying to keep pace with Schumacher. Get your facts right
To Rav A, can I suggest the name of a possible book too? How about "The rest are cr*p because I won" by Lew Hamilton. Or maybe "Ah diddums" the Ferrari biography for 2008? Keep smiling mate, keep smiling!
Lewis Hamilton should have won the 2007 season. He earned it. 2008 season he earned it even more. Dont forget Ferrari got away with a lot of penalties in 2008, and Hamilton got a couple of penalties that wern't even his fault. i.e Massa hitting Hamilton, Massa overtaking in the pit lane, Massa being released into the path of another car (he only got a stop go penalty for this when historically other cars have been given 5 or 10 place penalty, or even a race ban). You should really analyse the facts before you critise Hamilton. Also, Schumacher was a very good driver, but not the best. Senna was. Dont forget, Senna was leading over Schumacher when he had his fatal crash.
Ferrari are run by the mafia, and Bernie is in the pockets of the mafia and gets bummed by them on a regular basis, how else do you explain such a dominance over one sport by one man? ahahahaha FACT! ahahahaa
marnio from peru: You read much rubbish? More like you post much rubbish. JBolan, Ollieboyyy, or whatever your name is, give it a rest already, at least til the season restarts. If not come up with something new instead of simply rehashing the same old @#$% over and over again.
BMWs not my favourite car either give me an Austin Allegro 'S'.
Stroke me a Stripper
to not printable
as for the blue and white yes a good colour but the cream and white or turquoise and white are better looking on this car
Christian who?
The rule changes I thought were to make the drivers in more control and make their influence the deciding factor in a race. Im all for that. Admittedly you have ask about the technological side of things and F1 supposidly being the innacle of whats new and innovative in the car industry as a whole, but iit is also a sport and you need competition to be a sport which F1 did lose when Schumacher was the dogs boll*cks. Fingers crossed more competition will come with the new changes, unfortuantely it might make the cars very ugly...OMG that is a foul looking machine!!
These F1 cars look stu**d. The ones from season 2007 look much cooler. These new regulations every year are gonna make the sport very uncool
In the same way as you report racist comments, let us all report 'Marnio from Peru' for its stupidity. Enough of this @#$%.
The uglist car a bit like BMW driver Robert he so ugly he makes babies cry eh eh I agree the car is ugly and F1 is going backwards like the governing body who is destorying F1.
aormk 1800 - give it the full and correct title austin NASH metropolitan (in blue and white of course)
