Premier League - Spurs axe goalkeeping coach

Eurosport - Wed, 19 Nov 11:47:00 2008

Tottenham Hotspur have cancelled the contract of goalkeeping coach Hans Leitert after a series of high-profile blunders by Heurelho Gomes.

2008-2009 Tottenham Hotspur Heurelho Gomes - 0

The 35-year-old Austrian joined the club in the close season and has been working with Brazilian Gomes.

A club statement read: "We should like to thank him for his contribution and wish him well. An announcement regarding a new appointment will be made in due course."

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp underlined his faith in Gomes and is backing the goalkeeper to bounce back from his recent blunders this weekend.

Gomes, a summer signing from PSV Eindhoven, has been guilty of a series of errors this season, with his latest costing Spurs Premier League points at Fulham last Saturday.

Redknapp can call on Spanish veteran Cesar Sanchez, and youngster Ben Alnwick has returned from a loan spell at Carlisle, but has suggested the 27-year-old will get another chance at home to Blackburn on Sunday.

The former Portsmouth boss said: "He's our number one goalkeeper so he's got to do the job - we're relying on him heavily.

"I believe in him and we have to believe in him.

"Obviously he is disappointed with the weekend but his record tells you he is a world-class goalkeeper.

"He has to bounce back from that and turn in a terrific performance this weekend. I'm sure he'll do that. He's a strong character. It's up to him now."

  2. gomez is a great goalkeeper and anyone who says differently doesnt watch much football. yes he makes sometimes stupid mistakes but a few mistakes in a season cannot make his ability as a keeper be put in doubt. and making silly mistakes i guess is a thing common between brazilian gk.

  4. HA ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha i couldn't help but laugh when i read what the pompey girl said, whats the matter? you oln tender hooks? you need money we have a fair amount of it and you need it, regardless if they play well for TA the board will only see the pound signs.

I am not going to say that Harry is the best manager in the world but the players love him and if Defoe wants to come back well i think it is a wise move, lets see how good Harry has done in 6 months then if we continue this run of good fortune i will happily bow down to his every need (within reason) Well done Harry your doing a good job, lets just make sure we keep it up...

  8. David James for Spurs? I think not. Remember what he used to be called? Calamity James. And that was when he played for England. You could say he was a bit like Gomes - brilliant yet flawed. It could well be that with some decent coaching, Gomes will be able to acclimatise to the Premiership, gain in confidence and, at the same time, gain the confidence of his team mates. I hope so.

  9. gomez is a brilliant keeper, just lacking confidence to play in the EPL ..

  10. Gomes had his changes but he fail all, there no need to keep such a dull goalkeeper on the club that fighting to make it to top, his carear is ending up so bad that he is creating more problems for the club, if I would have my will I will sell Gomes, he's nothing but history

  12. gomes was a top keeper at PSV why is he so bad now? or is PSV so good any keeper would look good in their league?

From Roxy, on Wed 19 Nov 1:35PM
  13. the hands belong to gomes or the coach??? are gomes the invented robot who need to be teach b4 the match start and so he will get good form, even the club have a good goalkeeping coach but the keeper not steady, its still useless!!

From kathy, on Wed 19 Nov 1:31PM
  14. a good approach from harry, why we must keep a coach when he cannot help the player to show a good performance, every 1 say it was gomes weakness that lead to his flumber during the match, n it was the coach responsibilities to ensure that a player not to do the mistake. it was coach who create the player and make player to be number 1 player in the world. like others great player, it was combination of their own creativity and caoch hard work during the training to develope a high class player

  17. A MESSAGE TO HARRY REDKNAP!

YOU KEEP YOUR THIEVING HANDS OFF OF ANY OF OUR PLAYERS! I AM SURE THAT I SPEAK FOR MOST POMPEY FANS WHEN I THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID FOR US DOWN AT FRATTON, BUT PLEASE DON'T TRY AND TAKE PLAYERS FROM POMPEY! WE HAVE A FANTASTIC TEAM NOW THAT HAVE SHOWN THEY CAN PLAY JUST AS WELL UNDER TONY AS THEY DID FOR YOU. PLEASE DO NOT UNDERMINE TONY AND THE REST OF THE STAFF AT POMPEY.

I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST AT SPURS. BUT REMENBER THE SQUAD AT POMPEY BELONG TO POMPEY, NOT YOU. YOU MAY HAVE ASSEMBLED THAT TEAM AND BROUGHT US SUCCESS. LET TONY AND THE BOYS CARRY ON WHERE YOU LEFT OFF!!

From Lord Dambo of Purbrookshire, on Wed 19 Nov 10:59AM
  18. The sacking of the coach is of no great surprise, harry's sights will once again turn to the Portsmouth back room staff until january where it will then turn to their first team, all this pilfering from the man who said he could nt take Portsmouth any further what he meant was he didnt have enough money to spend and cant do it on his own so he will have what he can from Portsmouth and yes I am a very disgruntled Portsmouth fan, Harry's abilities is second to none I do however feel that in leaving us he should have left behind the staff and the players, not pilfer what he can!!! Spurs dont deserve to be where they are and despite the blunders at the weekend Gomez has proved himself countless times and lets face it he is far better than Robinson!!!

From NICKI, on Wed 19 Nov 10:57AM
  19. how can spurs axe the goalkeeping coach its not his fault that Gomez can save shots hes not on the pitch

    From konkol69er, on Wed 19 Nov 10:34AM
  20. gomes needs to get back in shape. as previous games he was knocked by our defence left right and centre and this shows his confidence that the defence are not protecting him so he can protect our goal, give him time on or off the pitch but dont let him go robinson was well respected and done a brilliant job but also made mistakes

    NEW generation SPURS
