Tech 3 stars at war over crew chief

Yamaha Tech 3 stars James Toseland and Colin Edwards have fallen out after the Briton took the American's crew chief for the 2009 season.

Sheffield rider Toseland, 27, will work with Gary Reynders in 2009 as he bids to earn a further ride when his contract expires at the conclusion of that campaign.

Twice World Superbike champion Toseland came into MotoGP at the start of last season and finished 11th in the riders' standings while his colleague took seventh, almost 40 points better off.

"I'd had a couple of conversations with Colin's crew chief over the year and he was highly praised for his work inside the team and with the Japanese," Toseland told Motor Cycle News.

"Gary pointed out that he would like to work with me. It is not a secret that it could be Colin's last year in 2009 and Gary also wants a longer career in MotoGP, as I do.

"I can't have the inconsistency next year, because I don't want it to be my last year, either.

"It was discussed in a way to move the team forward. I'm sure that the dust will settle, even though it is an awkward situation."

Texan Edwards, 34, slammed his team-mate - who he also raced alongside at Castrol Honda in the late Nineties, when Toseland was a teenager - for the move.

"It is just that the code of ethics has definitely been broken," he said. "I think he has crossed the line.

"The thought of taking my team-mate's crew chief would never have crossed my mind, but I guess I've got a different code of ethics than what James has and that's probably the part that has p***ed me off the most.

"I won't lose any sleep over not talking to James."

Edwards cranked up the pressure on Toseland, who explained that he knew early in the season that things would not work out with his 2008 chief Guy Coulon.

"He's got the best crew chief he believes he can have, so now he's got to go out and prove it and stop blaming everything else," Edwards said.

"His only option now is to win races. He's got no excuses; now I don't feel any need to show any respect towards both of them, really."

Toseland said: "The simple fact is there was a communication problem between Guy and myself. There was a lack of understanding between my feedback and how it translated into the bike.

"I'm not criticising anybody. This is solely to get an understanding so we can work in a more productive way."

  2. As much as I like Colin he was lucky that Yamaha have kept him in Moto GP and not sent him back to WSB. AS for Toesland he may only have won 2 WSB titles but unlike Foggy he did them on different machinery.

  3. What a happy team this is. How long before a wall goes up between their garages.

  4. What upsets me is that Toseland doesn't get the praise he deserves. You all class Foggy as a true great and yes he was. But in his time there was only Ducati's to worry about and by far, Foggy was on the best one! Toseland beat the best, and even beat the Ducati's which have always had an edge of some sort at each track. In Motogp he did what I expected him to do, learn. He raced hard and fast and as Rossi said "he can onyl get faster and harder". I have no doubt he has the ability to win races. But, so does Ben Spies, Cal Crutchlow, Simoncelli, Luthi, Barbera and a lot of other younger riders. Sadly, if Toseland doesn't so a more consistent run and closer to the top of the table it might be his last year...There is always someone knocking on the door in Motogp. As for Colin Edwards, spit his dummy out, he knew it was happening and long long time ago. What did he suddenly wake up from a coma? Rossi once said "when there's a judder Colin's the first to complain about it". It's the same here. What bothers me the most is why he's still there....Barros and Checa weighed up their chances of winning and stepped aside, why doesn't Edwards?

  5. There are so many great British riders to chose from, but Mackenzie has a great shot with Lucky Strike Suzuki and finsihed well up in the field. Had he bargened and managed himself better in the close season he would ahve landed a Cagiva works ride the next year. He didn't and ended up with a privateer bike. He was ahero of mine as a kid, but I felt he could have been so much more that just the British Champion.

  6. Regardless of which is the better rider, I think it was a despicable low act!
Showing some class, by stealing Jeremy Burgess, would have been a better move.

  7. Mackenzie, what a joke!

  8. Colin Edwards has fallen by the wayside. He was told of the internal changes by boss Harve Poncheral in Australia over two months ago. Everyone knew it was a decision made by Yamaha to move the pit crews and re-asselble the tech 3 line up of back room staff. It has nothing to do with Toseland. What else, oh yes, Edwards has had his throw of the dice, and has never really been a title contender even when given one the best bikes on the track. When you're on your way down, you're on you way out.

  9. I think for his first year Toesland has done well enough with what he's had to work with, The Michelin tyres started the year well but didn't keep up for very long and were complete rubbish mid season as the results of all the riders using them showed. Lets hope next year he can shine a bit more.

  10. sorry james your an "also ran" in moto go, return to WSB'S, although i think your struggle there now, i know join a band/group etc and PLAY THE PIANO!!!! your good at that- repsol ross

  11. Dont get me wrong, I DO support british riders, I thought that if mckenzie had been given a chance he would have been great, MacWilliams did try very hard but still not in that class, I just hope the youngsters in 125 come up through the ranks & do us proud, at the end of the day its going to be money and the right outfit that will bring them along, same as would Lewis Hamilton be world champion if he drove for force india.... dont think so....

  12. Toesland beat Bayliss, Biaggi, Checka, Corser and Haga who are obviously just a bunch of nobodies in your eyes. But either way you can't take World Championships lightly whether there scraped to or not. I'm not trying to say he's the best rider in Moto GP and I do think that he has to prove next year that he really deserves to be there for longer but it seems to me that people just don't want British riders in the series and refuse to support their own countrymen which I find really sad.

From GEORGE, on Thu 20 Nov 7:58PM
  13. He scrapped through both titles, I honestly thought he had thrown the last one away. I would love to see Stoner & Rossi on the same machines. Rossi is world class even makes it look easy on that Yamaha mini moto he rides....
Fogarty was a world class rider, Toseland is not in the same league.....

From Glyn, on Thu 20 Nov 7:49PM
  14. jigabyte, which part of being a 2 times world champion do you think makes Toesland not a world class rider? Do you really think the only world class riders can come from 250's just because the 800's are tailored to that style of riding? Most of the modern day Moto GP riders that have come from 250's wouldn't have a prayer on the old 500cc 2 strokes.

From GEORGE, on Thu 20 Nov 7:45PM
  15. I am British and have to agree that Toseland will not fair any better next season, he is a good rider but not world class.....sorry....

From Glyn, on Thu 20 Nov 7:30PM
  16. Edwards and Tosland at war great stuff,As Rossi was saying racing was getting boring, with him having to ask Stoner if it was all right to pass him,and the usual procession behind,Colin and James spice things up a bit
Dont worry i am sure they will kiss and make up before the end of the season (Having finished 1st and 2nd in championship (IN MY DREAMS)

    From brianbowman49, on Thu 20 Nov 5:01PM
  17. By the way Geezer, Rossi had enough trouble getting past in one of the last few races and told MCN that Toesland rides like the devil. Maybe it's because Toesland isn't an Itailian that your all so keen to put him down

From GEORGE, on Thu 20 Nov 4:20PM
  18. Geezer, 6th in his very first race in Moto GP was great but next year he has really got to prove that he's good enough to be there. Unlike the riders from 250's he's had to learn most of the tracks this year.

From GEORGE, on Thu 20 Nov 4:16PM
  19. Invalid? why cant i compare a piannist with an over the hill racer?.
