Celtic have been told they would be "wasting their time" if they try to prise James McFadden away from Everton.
Striker McFadden has been linked with a move to the SPL champions following his outstanding performances in Scotland's ill-fated Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.
The 24-year-old has also subject to speculation that he could join his former international manager Alex McLeish at Birmingham City in the January transfer window.
However, Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has flatly ruled out any move for the ex-Motherwell forward.
Wyness said: "I haven't spoken to the manager but no approach from Celtic has come through me or the club. James McFadden is under contract to Everton and we have made it clear we don't want to sell him.
"He is a major player in our squad and will continue to play a vital role for the team. If any club made an approach in January they would be wasting their time."
McFadden has scored six goals in 16 appearances for Everton so far this season.
