Swindon have bid to make Sheffield United midfielder Gary Speed their new manager.

FOOTBALL - Gary Speed, Sheffield United - 0

Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell confirmed the speculation regarding Speed's future and said he would not stand in the former Bolton, Newcastle, Everton and Leeds man's way should he choose to leave Bramall Lane.

"There has been contact from Swindon with Gary and I have told him that whatever he does is fine by me," Blackwell told the Blades website.

"He is injured at the moment, could face a long rehabilitation and is 39 years of age, but he has options on the table.

"It will be up to Gary to decide, and I am already having to get used to being without him as a player which is a massive blow."

Former Wales skipper Speed is expected to quit playing after being told surgery on a back problem will rule him out for the season.
