Manchester City have terminated discussions with Milan over the proposed transfer of former world footballer of the year Kaka.
City confirmed in a statement they had pulled out of negotiations as there was little chance of a deal being done.
Executive chairman Garry Cook told the club's official website: "Whilst Manchester City Football Club has an obvious interest in world-class players of the quality of Kaka, we owe it to our fans that such a transfer must work on every level; commercially, financially, in terms of results on the field and within Manchester City's broader community."
The dramatic development came at the end of a day when it seemed Kaka was moving tantalisingly close to joining the Eastlands outfit.
Cook, along with other members of the City delegation, had meetings with Milan officials and Kaka's father, Bosco Leite, on Monday.
But it soon became apparent that the complexity of the transfer was not going to work in City's favour and the player, who never spoke face-to-face with the Blues, was not keen on leaving Milan anyway.
Kaka had pointed to his heart when appearing at the window of his house to wave at protesters who had gathered outside to make their feelings known tonight.
The move was slightly ambiguous but, just minutes before City's statement, Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi delivered the news all Rossoneri supporters wanted to hear.
"Kaka is staying at Milan," he told Italia 7 TV.
"He has turned down the money and he won't ask for an increase. He prefers to stay at Milan."

i think everybody is entitled to his or her own opinion. kaka's decision to stay back at milan should be commended. it shows he is principled. at least he has proved it that money can buy many things but not everything. my advice to city is to concentrate on the need to build their team from the scratch rather than looking for ways of chasing big players with their oil money.
Yes Hughesy, it was a complex deal, cos he didn't want to come and play for the blue s hite. He was looking at houses in alderley edge until he realised it wasn't united! Ha ha ha
If you put Michael Schumacher in a Minardi your going nowhere. If you put KAKA in City your going nowhere. No need to worry.
ITS ABOUT TIME A PLAYER DIDNT MOVE SOMEWHERE JUST FOR THE MONEY THAT WAS BEING OFFERED HE OBVIOUSLY LIKES ITALY HEY HUGHESY ILL PLAY FOR TEN GRAND A WEEK IF U WANT BUT U HAVE TO PAY THE MISSUS 6 MIL

SISTER WOULD MAKE A GREAT FULL BACK FOR CITY
A CITY FAN
Kaka has set a precedant. Any footballer who wants any respect will not join Man City, because it will look like they are cashing in and will affect their public image. This is important to the world class players as it will impact on their sponsorship deals. Public image doesn't worry Craig Bellamy. City are going to struggle to get big names on the back of this...
Kaka' made a correct decision. he should stay in AC Milan and win titles win them
RIVALDO IS THE BEST!!!
keithroyle, you are absolutely right with Kaka! Money got defeated by spirit of a great man!
Why the hurry? it takes some seasons for any football club to establish herself on the football club world stage. no amount of money can turn man city into the likes of great REAL MADRID, AC MILAN, LIVERPOOL. Robinho most have learnt his mistake for joining city, all because of money. so the Arab owners with their petrodollars thinks great and established players like CASSILAS, KAKA, MESSI, TERRY,TORRES,RONALDINHO will join them since robinho could move to city. kaka has rejected them and i know other great footballers will turn down any lucrative offer from them. mark hughes should build a team. Eh still dancing at the relegation zone.
"We owe it to our fans that such a transfer must work on every level"

by the way, why did they want Kaka SO SO bad!?
It just was never gonna go through....unlike Robinho who was desperate to leave Madrid, Kaka's very well at home at Milan thank you!
