Fletcher hoping for Burley call

Wed 20 Feb, 02:00 PM

Hibernian striker Steven Fletcher believes his chances of breaking into the next Scotland squad are more realistic than joining Real Madrid. The 20-year-old has been linked with the Spanish league leaders but claims the suggestions of a move to the Bernabeu are "far-fetched".

However he is eager to step up at international level, having already been capped at Under-21 and B level.

Fletcher told Hibernian Interactive: "I would like to get into the full international squad, everyone wants to play for their country I think so I'm like everyone else, waiting and hoping for the call from the manager.

"To get that I need to keep playing well for Hibernian, keep scoring goals and then time will tell."

Scotland face Croatia at Hampden on March 26, in their first match since George Burley was named the new national team head coach.

Burley selected a training squad last month which was made up of established squad players, but there could be room for the likes of Fletcher in his next selection.

Fletcher is aware of reports that Madrid are watching him, but the young Scot is taking the speculation in his stride.

"It's nice to be told that they are watching but it's far, far way from Hibernian to Real Madrid," he said.

"It's all a little bit too far-fetched for me, it is I think because I've done well for Scotland's Under-21s and that is perhaps how they have recognised me. But I can't see it happening myself!

"Obviously you tell yourself that you are good enough to go to places like that, if not what would be the point in playing?"
