McIlroy hits out at Shrews boss

Wed 20 Feb, 01:15 PM

Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy has hit out at Gary Peters as a bitter war of words erupted over the postponement of Saturday's League Two clash. The Christie Park clash was called off due to a frozen pitch and Shrewsbury manager Peters claimed the Shrimps could have done more to ensure the game was played.

However, McIlroy responded by claiming the Shrewsbury manager was actively seeking a postponement of the match, which has been re-arranged for Tuesday, April 8.

McIlroy told the Morecambe Visitor: "Gary Peters may not admit it but as far as I am concerned he got into the referee because he wanted it off.

"He even told me he would play if we defended in the affected end first and that said a lot to me.

"The referee slipped as he was inspecting it but I did say to him that with the utmost respect he does not have the balance of a professional footballer and people also slip on good pitches."
