Asafa Powell expects to run at athletics Melbourne Grand Prix

SYDNEY (AFP) - World 100-metre record holder Asafa Powell said Wednesday he expects to run in this week's Melbourne Athletics Grand Prix after recovering from a gash to his knee.

The Jamaican fell on stairs at home before arriving in Australia and needed four stitches to his left knee, forcing him to miss a run in Sydney last week.

But he came through a training session Wednesday and said he was on track to race in a World Athletics Tour event in Melbourne on Thursday.

"I would say after today's workout that things went well and I can run through the finish line," Powell told reporters.

"I can run at 90 percent so I would say (my chances are) 90 percent.

"The problem is can I come out of the blocks, so the coach says tomorrow if I can exit the blocks properly then I'll run for sure."
