Gills chairman blasts 'scumbags'

Thu 20 Mar, 04:30 PM

Gillingham chairman Paul Scally has branded the fans who abused him recently as "scumbags" and warned he could leave the club.A section of the Priestfield faithful turned on Scally during last Saturday's 3-0 defeat against fellow strugglers Crewe and after the game his car was vandalised.

The cash-strapped Gills are currently in the relegation places while off the field Scally is busy working with the bank to secure the long-term future of the Kent club.

But Scally has hit back at recent criticism, telling the Kent Messenger: "If I went tomorrow the club would collapse.

"I'm feeling very unhappy by it all at the minute. If it wasn't for the backing of the bank, the staff and other people then I would have walked out on Saturday night. I said when I first came here I'll only stay as long as the fans want me and if they don't then I'll go.

"On Saturday I was sat on a plane and I was leaving behind my family again all for the sake of the football club and those scumbags who abused me for 75 minutes on Saturday. I have to ask myself why? I wanted to get off the plane at one stage and turn around."
