Huth returns to Germany fold

Thu 20 Mar, 01:30 PM

Middlesbrough's Robert Huth has been named in the Germany squad to face Switzerland in an international friendly in Basle next Wednesday. The Boro defender, who has 17 international caps, has not played for his country since the World Cup win over Ecuador in June 2006.

But national coach Joachim Low has been impressed with the 23-year-old's recent displays.

"Robert has been playing in the Premier League again after some long-term injury problems and has impressed me with his usual strength," he said.

"Therefore, he has earned another chance."

Low has practically ended the chances of Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler and Schalke stopper Manuel Neuer making the squad for Euro 2008 by naming Jens Lehmann, Timo Hildebrand and Robert Enke in his 21-man squad.

These three are now likely to be his goalkeeping choices for the tournament in Austria and Switzerland, although it remains to be seen who will be given the number one shirt.

"We want to speak with all three goalkeepers and explain how things are before the European Championships," said Low.

"Together with (goalkeeping coach) Andreas Kopke, we have decided to take this step."

Elsewhere, Clemens Fritz, Marcell Jansen and Arne Friedrich are all back after injury, while Schalke's Heiko Westermann and Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling have both been called up for the second time.

"Stefan has proven himself in the Bundesliga and UEFA Cup this year and he should be given another chance to prove himself in the national team," said Low.

After the clash with Switzerland, Germany have games against Belarus and Serbia before they face Poland in their first game of Euro 2008 on June 8.

Squad: Enke (Hannover), Hildebrand (Valencia), Lehmann (Arsenal); Friedrich (Hertha Berlin), Huth (Middlesbrough), Jansen, Lahm (both Bayern Munich), Mertesacker (Werder Bremen), Westermann (Schalke); Ballack (Chelsea), Fritz (Werder Bremen), Hitzlsperger (Stuttgart), Rolfes, Schneider (both Bayer Leverkusen), Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), Trochowski (Hamburg); Gomez (Stuttgart), Kiessling (Bayer Leverkusen), Klose (Bayern Munich), Kuranyi (Schalke), Podolski (Bayern Munich).
