France Find No Place For Trez

Thu 20 Mar, 01:09 PM

France coach Raymond Domenech has named four newcomers in an enlarged 39-man squad for next week's international friendly double-header against Mali and England - but there is still no place for David Trezeguet.

Mathieu Bodmer, Mathieu Valbuena, Mathieu Delpierre and Adil Rami have been called up by Les Bleus for the first time.

Rio Mavuba, impressive since moving to Lille on loan from Villarreal in January, makes his return to the squad as does Manchester United striker Louis Saha, who has finally shaken off his injury problems.

But Juventus striker Trezeguet, the joint-top scorer in Italy's Serie A this season, has missed out once again as he refuses to play for France's A team.

He now looks to be out of the reckoning for Domenech's 23-man squad for the European Championship, which begins in June.

France will play Mali in an A international in Paris on Tuesday and then England in a senior international 24 hours later.

Domenech maintained he had named an enlarged squad so he could see as many players as possible before he picks his Euro 2008 squad in May.

"I wanted to broaden the squad," he said.

"I wanted to have the maximum number of players to keep my options open and to cover potential injuries that may occur.

"There are a couple of minor injuries so this is a preventative measure. So if somebody calls up on Sunday and says they can't play, it is not a problem.

"Everybody who needs to be on the list is on it. There are no surprises."

On Trezeguet, Domenech said: "It is the same as last time. I talked to him, listened to him, and I know him well. There is no point kicking up a fuss.

"If we need him, it's possible I will call him. That's possible, and I'm not closing the door on him."

The match against England is dominating the thoughts of Domenech, who has previously spoken out against the decision to appoint Italian Fabio Capello as manager.

Domenech commented about the same issue again on Thursday, saying: "Let me repeat, I never criticised Capello.

"I know him - he's an excellent coach and a nice guy.

"I never doubted his abilities as a coach. It is just on a personal note, I see it happening in England and I fear it could happen in France.

"I hope France never hire a foreign coach.

"But Capello is doing excellent work. I noticed in his first match (against Switzerland) that England's team work has improved.

"It will be a tough match for us, against their Italian-style organisation."
