David Beckham will learn today whether Fabio Capello has recalled him to the England squad for next week's friendly against France.
The Italian coach overlooked the LA Galaxy midfielder in his first squad after taking over from Steve McClaren, and Beckham has been made to wait for his eagerly anticipated 100th cap.
But the former England captain's chances of returning to the international fold were given a boost after Capello's right-hand man Franco Baldini met with Galaxy boss Ruud Gullit over the weekend.
Capello was given assurances over Beckham's fitness and he is likely to be included in a 30-man squad - which will later be trimmed to 23 - for Wednesday's game in Paris.
Theo Walcott is also expected to earn a recall after the Arsenal striker was omitted from Stuart Pearce's Under-21 squad.
Walcott, 19, has not featured for the national side since he made his debut nearly two years ago - against Hungary in the run up to the 2006 World Cup.
He was selected by then England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson for the tournament in Germany, although he did not get a game and has since failed to win another call-up.
But a recent resurgence in form has seen Walcott return to contention for the national side and Capello is expected to include him in his provisional squad.
Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon have also been left out of the Under-21 squad ahead of next week's clash with Portugal, suggesting the young duo could be in line for call-ups to the senior pool.
Meanwhile, France coach Raymond Domenech has included ten Premier League players in his squad to face England and Mali as Les Bleus warm up for Euro 2008.
