Premier League - Wilshere 'spat at Spurs fan cabbie'

Sun, 20 Mar 12:38:00 2011

Arsenal star Jack Wilshere has accepted a police warning for attempting to spit on a taxi driver who was wearing a hat of Arsenal's main rivals Tottenham.

Brian Spencer, 61, said that the behaviour of the 19-year-old England star was "the worst I've ever seen in my 38 years as a cabbie."

The incident happened during an alcohol fuelled night out in London's West End outside a lap-dancing club, with Spencer saying he refused to take Wilshere as a client because he was too drunk.

According to Spencer, Wilshere then attempted to spit through an open window but missed, hitting the window instead.

"I had no idea who he was. He pointed to my cab and said, 'You’re f***ing taking us'. When I told him he was too drunk he got even more aggressive," Spencer told the Sunday Mirror.

"He was looking at my Spurs hat and there was real hate in his eyes. Fortunately his friends pulled him away before it got really violent.

"Wilshere’s behaviour is the worst I’ve ever seen in my 38 years as a cabbie. No one deserves to be spat at because of the team they support."

A spokesperson for the Wilshere family responded by saying: "Jack is only 19 and adjusting to life in the spotlight. He realises his behaviour was wrong and he is full of remorse."

Arsenal added in a statement: "Jack apologises for his actions and understands his behaviour was unacceptable. We take this matter seriously and it has been dealt with internally."

Wilshere, who is on a reported £50,000-a-week, is expected to earn his third cap for England against Wales next weekend.

  1. He's been in the spotlight a lot recently. Could it be that it kicked off because the cabbie recognized him and didn't want a gooner as a fare? As for Mr T(165), I think he's got his 'hit' and 'spit' mixed up.

  2. Yeah right cabbie, the worst one hein??.......agree for a outrageous one but the worst...telling/selling your storing like this just mean you're not better than the "worst" customer you have ever met.
Think a bit and you might realise that the young man did it because he was drunk, I really doubt he spats at over fans during his spare time.
Well are you thinking to sue him to receive a nice compensation or is it done already???

  7. Nick so the MK Don's are still Wimbledon are they what about every other club in the country that’s moved to a new area what if spurs moved to Olympic stadium would they still be classed as a north London club No!... And it was the Royal Arsenal before Woolwich! And we changed names when we moved in 1913 nearly 100 years ago. North London Club

"And if or until people actually find out what happened then it really shouldn't be their place to judge him."

"I'm a journalism graduate I'm probably better educated than you and have a better job and I'm obviously much more eloquent than you are."

I don't think I need to add anything to your words. Hypocrisy of the highest order.

  11. 151- I'm a journalism graduate I'm probably better educated than you and have a better job and I'm obviously much more eloquent than you are. Hence why I questioned the authenticity of the report since it was written by the Mirror. Also less of the @#$% about that being a "mothering" reply. All it comes down to is that it is an report by the Mirror, not the most reputable of the tabloids. And if or until people actually find out what happened then it really shouldn't be their place to judge him. And that stands for everyone. Innocent until proven Guilty? Not with you people.

143 - Don't compare this to British kids being in the army. It is completely unrelated and a bit of a low blow. Yes there are 19 year olds fighting for the safety of Britain but if you actually went out and looked on the streets of England at the weekend there are more 19 year olds doing exactly what Jack Wilshere did and worse. You need to get some perspective. It has absolutely no relevance whether I am female or male idiot. I am a woman. And you are a jackass.

135 - MUCH worse things have happened to members of my family and friends and to me. He spat at a cabbie, it isn't the most mature thing to do. But again look at what 19 year olds are doing on the streets at weekends. Make a comparison and see which is worse. I in no way condone what he did but haven't people done worse?

I'm sick of people being so hypocritical. I assume that all of you are saints and obviously never stepped a foot out of line when you were teenagers. And have never had a drink, or got drunk or done something you've regretted.

From Olivia, on Tue 22 Mar 1:06AM
  12. Wilshere is still young so needs some more maturing but these incidents happen at that age.

  18. He's just your regular drunken teenager who's only in the news because he's a footballer. I'm sure you lot did a lot worse while you were drunk in your teenage years. Imagine if you had media scrutiny on everything you did! At least he didn't go around beating people like Joey Barton, or drink drive.

From Bernard, on Mon 21 Mar 2:28PM
  19. As a football player he is fantastic but as a person he is scum.

  20. Some people make me laugh. just because he apologised dosent make it alright. what if i went out and beat up a granny but then apologised does that make it alright. would he apologise if he wasnt seen. i dont think so. poor him, in the spotlight , earning lots of money and having everything given to him. it must be hard not to spit at people when you have everything. we should be gratefull that he dosent hit everybody he sees because he is so angry life has treated him so badly. grow up and man up .
