Brewster piles praise on Niculae

Sun 20 Apr, 09:15 AM

Inverness manager Craig Brewster will leave it to Romania boss Victor Piturca to decide whether Marius Niculae is worth a Euro 2008 place.Niculae is desperately hoping to be called up by his country for the summer tournament in Austria and Switzerland.

The former Sporting Lisbon forward's strike with 12 minutes remaining of a 3-0 victory for Inverness against Kilmarnock will no doubt impress members of Romania's coaching staff when they see it.

Niculae took control of a neat pass by Ross Tokely before placing the ball high into the roof of the net from 14 yards to seal a comfortable win in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

Brewster was delighted to see Niculae once again score for his side, but admits he has no idea whether it will improve the 26-year-old's hopes of starring for his country this summer.

He said: "I haven't a clue and you are asking the wrong person.

"At the end of the day I am only interested in him doing the business for Caley Thistle."

If Niculae continues to find the back of the net between now and the end of the season then he could well be the subject of bids from clubs chasing a goalscorer.

Brewster can take comfort in Niculae having another season left on his current contract, but the Inverness boss hinted he expects to receive offers for the striker.

He said: "That's him now on 10 goals and it is always nice to get into double figures.

"He has another year on his contract and it is always the same with any player.

"If clubs come in for players then you have to look at the situation and we are no different."

Inverness opened the scoring against Kilmarnock through a fine free-kick from Dougie Imrie, which was the midfielder's first goal for the club since signing from Clyde in January.

Brewster hopes Imrie will feel a weight has been lifted from his shoulders after getting off the mark.

"Since he has come here, he has been enthusiastic and desperate to do well, said Brewster.

"Hopefully that goal will now let him play without thinking he has to score.

"I said to him before the game, don't worry about scoring, just work hard for the team and things will come."

Imrie also had a large part to play in Caley Thistle's second goal as his cross was turned into the Kilmarnock net by visiting defender David Lilley.

Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies warned those members of his squad playing for new contracts that their cause had not been helped.

Kilmarnock travelled north hampered by a lengthy injury list including the likes of Frazer Wright, Craig Bryson, Allan Johnston and Martyn Corrigan.

But Jefferies insisted that factor did not justify the poor performance.

He said: "There were a number of players, out of contract at the end of the season, who had the opportunity to show that they deserve new deals.

"But they didn't do themselves much good.

"Four players had to have operations while three others we hoped would play weren't fit enough.

"So I knew we were coming up to Inverness with the bare bones, but I thought it would give me an opportunity to learn a lot.

"There are players in the squad I am looking at closely, some with clauses in their contracts that if they do not play a certain amount of games, the contract could be cancelled.

"They should be using these games for that reason and to put on a performance for our supporters."
