Davey bemused by Tykes defeat

Sun 20 Apr, 11:45 AM

Barnsley manager Simon Davey does not know how his team managed to lose 1-0 to fellow relegation strugglers Leicester.Iain Hume's 10th goal of the season was about the only thing City had created that was on target, while the Tykes were left to rue Martin Devaney being thwarted by the post in the first half.

Barnsley had much of the better chances in a tight encounter, with Brian Howard and Diego Leon also going close, but could not find the goals they needed to mathematically guarantee their Championship safety.

Davey said: "We did not deserve to lose. We have been hit by a real sucker punch. To hit the post, create chances and still not win is hard for us to take and it hurts.

"We need to finish the job of escaping relegation now. We face Charlton next week and although it appears that they have nothing to play for, that could work against us.

"They will have the freedom to play, if they have nothing to play for. That takes the pressure on them and back on to us.

"I still believe, and always have, that we can stay up. We have got to go out and do it now. The next two games are vital and we must finish strong."

Leicester manager Ian Holloway believes his team have silenced their critics with a win at Oakwell.

Three points sees them climb out of the relegation places and, with Sheffield Wednesday losing at Blackpool, the day could not have been much kinder to the Foxes.

Their Championship fate is back in their own hands and, if they beat Wednesday at the Walkers Stadium next weekend, they will be safe.

He said: "We came here with everyone saying that we were doomed and we came away with the win.

"It was a tense and nervous affair but fortunately we have done enough to win.

"Martin Devaney scored two belters against me at Plymouth last season and I thought he was going to do it again when he hit the post.

"I have never known a season like this. You just can't predict what is going to happen. I really don't know who is going to stay up. I think there are a lot more twists and turns to come.

"Nothing has been decided today and we know that. It will be tough but if we win next weekend we will be safe and that has to be the goal for us.

"I was pleased Hume got the goal. He respects it is a privilege to be a Leicester player."
