Pardew: We are not good enough

Sun 20 Apr, 10:15 AM

Alan Pardew conceded Charlton have not been good enough to get promoted as he began the inquest into their disappointing season.Dexter Blackstock's strike secured a 1-0 win for QPR and consigned the Addicks to another term in the Championship, with the play-offs now out of reach with two games remaining.

Pardew admits promotion next season is vital, with just one parachute payment left, and will not shy away from making some difficult decisions as he attempts to build a side capable of bouncing back to the top flight.

"I've a good idea of some flaws in the squad which we did not correct in the last transfer window and we have to correct them in the summer," said the Addicks boss.

"It's very painful. I've got some honest players who are hurting now. It's been a season of frustration.

"The fans expected to bounce back but we haven't done that. For us now it's a chance to have a look at a couple of things for next year and get a head start on everyone else.

"I'm convinced I can turn this side into one good enough to get promoted.

"It just hasn't happened this season. I'm not disappointed with the players - they have given me everything they have but we just haven't been good enough.

"I know the responsibility I have to try to get this team back to the Premiership. We've got one parachute payment to go so it's essential we get it right."

The Addicks kicked off knowing only a win would keep their faint hopes alive, but instead they put in an error-strewn performance and looked beaten from the moment Blackstock's 15th-minute effort hit the net.

Blackstock grabbed his third goal in three games when he pounced on Patrick McCarthy's hesitancy to attack a high ball, rounded the defender again and fired the ball past Nicky Weaver.

So poor was Charlton's display, the travelling fans began ironically chanting 'ole' when their side managed to string more than two passes together.

"A season of frustration was borne out for us today. I'm very disappointed with the day's events. We started second best and struggled to get out of gear," added Pardew.

"We gifted them the goal and it was a difficult day for us. Overall QPR made it difficult for us today and we didn't come up with the answers."

By contrast Rangers, with seemingly little to play for having long since banished any fears of relegation, look a side destined for a bright future under their mega-rich owners, Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore.

The hosts, who were bottom of the table when they won at The Valley in October, will be among the favourites for promotion next season and at times showed why.

"I'm very happy indeed because from the outside it might have looked as though we didn't have the motivation to win the game," said manager Luigi De Canio.

"But even with a few important absentees we played an excellent game. What gives me most joy is that we still have a lot of room for improvement."
