Impey wins Turkey despite crash

Eurosport - Mon, 20 Apr 09:23:00 2009

Daryl Impey of Barloworld won the Tour of Turkey despite being involved in a messy crash in the home stretch of the eighth and final stage.

Impey was tugged into the barriers and spent a lengthy time on the deck but as it was the run for home he was still awarded the same time as the peloton when he finally dusted himself down and cycled over the line.

The South African's accident was one of three crashes on the run from Antalya to Alanya which was won by German Sebastian Siedler (Vorarlberg-Corratec) in a sprint finish ahead of Belgium's Michael Van Staeyen (Rabobank).

Impey's finished just one second ahead of Davide Malacarne (Quick Step) in the overall classification with Xacobeo Galicia rider David Garcia Dapena completing the podium.

STAGE SEVEN

Robert Foerster claimed stage seven of the Presidential Tour of Turkey, bursting out from a perfect lead-out from his Milram team in Antalya.

Foerster finished half a bike's length ahead of Austrian Daniel Schorn. Foerster raised his arms in triumph and was almost embarrased by the Elk Haus rider but just had enough speed to avoid the fate of his fellow German Danilo Hondo who prematurely celebrated stage six success and was pipped to the line.

A group of 24 came to the line together at the end of the 114.5km stage from Finike but it did not include Pieter Jacobs of Silence-Lotto nor Acqua & Sapone's Alessandro Donati whose chances of overall victory have vanished after losing more than three minutes.

Going into Sunday's final flat stage, Daryl Impey leads by one second from Davide Malacarne with David Garcia Dapena a further two seconds back and Gustavo Cesar Veloso ten seconds behind the leader from Barloworld.

STAGE SIX

Mauro Finetto won his second stage of the Presidential Tour of Turkey, taking stage six in Finike.

The Italian CSF Group-Navigare rider, winner of the opening stage, was gifted victory at the end of the 194km trip from Fethiye as Danilo Hondo prematurely celebrated the success and was pipped to the line.

Barloworld's Daryl Impey took the overall lead from David Loosli. The Swiss Lampre rider was involved in a minor crash 29km from the end and after some subsequent mechanical problems, he laboured to the finish and lost over three minutes in the process.

Despite two testing climbs early in the stage, a large group came to the finish together after a series of breakaway attempts were foiled.

STAGE FIVE

Olivier Kais of Silence-Lotto won the fifth stage of the Presidential Tour of Turkey.

The Belgian pipped Italians Alessandro Fantini and Diego Caccia in a sprint.

Kais and Caccia had led for most of the race after they broke away early on.

In the general classification, Switzerland's David Loosli (Lampre) retained his slight advantage over stage four winner Daryl Impey.

South African Impey is two seconds behind Loosli and one ahead of Italian Davide Malacarne.

STAGE FOUR

South Africa's Daryl Impey won the 166.9km fourth stage of the Presidential Tour of Turkey from Bodrum to Marmaris.

Barloworld rider Impey was part of a nine-rider breakaway that fought out the stage and he powerfully outsprinted Davide Malacarne of Quick Step and David Loosli of Lampre.

"I'm so happy I knew my condition was good and today I sealed the deal on this important stage. We raced over rain-soaked roads and I was so lucky because I didn't crash. In the finale I kept the best possible position going into the last corner and then won the sprint," Impey said.

The stage was the toughest of this year's race with two testing climbs while rain made the day even more demanding and caused several crashes.

Italy's Gianpaolo Cheula attacked on the first climb and sparked a three-rider breakaway but the trio were caught by the bunch with 30km to go.

The race continues on Thursday with the 130km fifth stage from Marmaris to Fethiye.

STAGE THREE

Andre Schulze took stage three of the Presidential Tour of Turkey in a bunch sprint finish in Bodrum.

The PSK Whirlpool rider showed a fantastic turn of speed to comfortably win after a tricky end to the 166.1km trip from Kusadasi.

Giuseppe Palumbo (Acqua & Sapone) and Daryl Impey (Barloworld) took the minor places.

Vladimir Isaychev (Xacobeo Galicia), Alessandro Fantini (Acqua & Sapone-Caffe Mokambo) and Oscar Garcia (Contentpolis-Ampo) enriched the stage with an early breakaway. They opened up a near 20 minute lead over the peloton only to be caught inside the final 10km.

Stage one winner Mauro Finetto retains the overall lead after managing to avoid a crash at a roundabout in the final kilometres.

STAGE TWO

Defending champion David Garcia of Xacobeo Galicia upset the sprinters to win stage two of the Presidential Tour of Turkey.

The 132.5km trek from Izmir to Kusadasi was expected to favour the fast men but the Spanish rider broke clear with 3km remaining and held on for victory.

Andre Schulze (PSK Whirlpool-Author) and Sebastian Siedler (Vorarlberg-Corratec) followed three seconds behind.

Garcia moved into second on general classification, eight seconds behind stage one winner Mauro Finetto.

Five Pro Tour teams are competing in the eight-day event that was promoted to UCI category one level last year.

  3. Was it Theo Bos who assaulted Impey? If so, I'm pretty disappointed. Bos was a great track rider but, on that evidence, he should not be allowed to do any more road racing! Totally unacceptable...

  5. It looked liked Impey was deliberately held on to by the shoulder and thrown into the crowd control barriers. I hope the rider responsible (who also crashed because of his actions) is given a lengthy ban.
