Marseille skipper Lorik Cana has dismissed fears his season will be ended by the red card he received in Sunday's 2-1 win at Lorient.

The Albania midfielder was sent off in the 88th minute at Le Moustoir after an ugly melee involving Lorient defender Arnaud Le Lan, who also received his marching orders, by the touchline.

The pair brawled on the ground after disputing a throw-in and Cana was seen to clench his fist in a manner that suggested he was ready to throw a punch.

Ligue 1's disciplinary commission will look at footage of the incident later in the week before deciding on what how to deal with the miscreants, but Cana remains confident any ban will be shortlived.

"I don't see why I should be worried," he said.

"Arnaud and me, we will be punished but there is nothing to be worried about.

"The referee (Olivier Thual) said to me he brought out the red card because of the seriousness of the incident but I am quite calm."

Cana added: "Arnaud is a super guy, the last person I would want to go and attack.

"We both wanted the ball. He looked at the assistant referee who said, 'Lorient's ball' and I looked at the referee who said, 'Marseille's ball'. We clashed.

"What happened is more spectacular than anything. There was no violence."

Victory in Lorient saw Marseille take a two-point lead over second-placed Bordeaux at the top of the table with six games remaining.

Marseille have not won a French league title wince 1992.

  1. Cana should have his ban rescinded. It was the other player who jumped him and threw him to the ground. Cana just responded to being attacked. His part in the incident should be forgiven
