Fletcher fires Bournemouth warning

Tue 20 May, 05:30 PM

Ex-Bournemouth star Steve Fletcher has warned his former club they have a massive fight on their hands to get out of League Two next year.Fletcher was part of the Cherries side which bounced back to the third tier at the first attempt in 2003 but the 35-year-old, who is on the look-out for a new club after turning down a second year with Chesterfield, fears it will be an even tougher proposition this time around.

He told the Daily Echo: "It's not as easy as people may think. Although we came straight back up five years ago, I think the division is a lot more competitive now than it was then.

"It could be a bit of an eye-opener for anybody who thinks a repeat of the 2003 success could be on the cards. I'm not saying they won't do it, but I'm not saying they will either.

"You only have to look at some of the teams to see the standard. Bournemouth played MK Dons in the Johnstone's Paint last season and they are a decent team. I'm sure there will be times when Bournemouth will trounce teams and, at other times, it will be very difficult.

"You might get 70 to 80% of teams trying to play football in League One, but you probably get 50% or less in League Two. A lot of teams try to get out of the division by kicking their way out and that's something you've got to try to deal with."
