Champions League - Safety warning for United fans

Eurosport - Wed, 20 May 11:02:00 2009

The Foreign Office has stated its concern for the safety of Manchester United fans at the Champions League final in Rome as up to 10,000 prepare to travel to the match against Barcelona without tickets.

FOOTBALL - Manchester United fans ready for Champions League final in Rome - 0

Rome has a history of trouble around European matches, with supporters of English clubs the victim of stabbings, fights, muggings and thefts in the past - including United.

The FCO warned fans which metro stops and other areas of the city to avoid in a leaflet issued to supporters of the Old Trafford club.

"Do not take the metro to the Piazzale Flaminio or use the Ponte Duca D'Aosta bridge as there has been trouble along this route to the stadium on many occasions," read one typical message.

UEFA had threatened to take the final away from Rome if Roma's Champions League quarter-final against United last season was marred by a repeat of the violence that hit United's previous two visits.

That did not happen but Arsenal fans were attacked before their team knocked out Roma in a last-16 second leg in March.

In a statement, the FCO says it is worried about the number of fans making the trip, estimated will be 30,000.

"Whilst last year's Champions League Final in Moscow saw exemplary behaviour from British fans, the Foreign Office is concerned that the sheer amount of fans travelling to Rome could lead to safety issues in the Italian capital," the FCO said in the statement.

"It has therefore worked in close collaboration with the Italian authorities to put in place stringent safety plans, as well as offering crucial tips and advice to fans before they travel.

"These can be seen in full on a dedicated webpage on the FCO website."

The Foreign Office also says that the excitement generated by "the dream final" between two of Europe's most glamorous and successful clubs, will lead to more last-minute decisions to travel to Rome next week, thus increasing the likelihood that British fans will experience difficulties.

"One in five Brits neglect to take out any form of travel insurance and this number dramatically increases with last-minute planning and short stays.

"The FCO is particularly worried that the current economic climate means that more fans will be cutting corners and will decide against taking out travel insurance.

"This could have potentially disastrous consequences for football travellers, as a fall in Rome resulting in a broken leg could cost up to £2,500 without insurance."

Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno added: "We are delighted to be hosting such a fantastic event and we have worked hard to ensure that all visitors have an enjoyable and trouble-free stay in our city.

"Rome welcomes the British fans with open arms, and we look forward to celebrating this great sporting festival together."

problem is 99.9% of English fans (re:HOOLIGANS) are troublemakers...

  2. If the English hooligans cause any more problems they should face another multiple year ban... but I don't know if you could actually ban the EPL teams as they have NO ENGLISH PLAYERS.

From DaGringo, on Sat 23 May 3:48AM
  3. Watch these English retards ... When they lose they'll riot and get smacked around by the riot cops.... they'll run away crying with the tails in between their legs at which point, to try to lose that typically British emasculated feeling, they'll try to beat up some Italian guys... said guys will pull out their pig-stickers and logically stick some English pigs maybe even to death (one can always hope)... the survivors will run back to England calling the italians racist animals when they are in fact just fed up of English animals. They will also call Barcelona, Platini, and UEFA cheats when in fact the truth is that the English teams are over rated. This you may call the most likely and truthful scenario...

  4. Did anyone mention UEFA cup final held in Machester and very well behaved Rangers FC supporters and Police very able (NOT) to deal with them?
No? Well, it's cos of you UK guys only blame everyone else, but yourself.

  5. I'm glad Utd arent playing an italian side in the final, if they were you could be sure the police would side with the Italian fans. Policing should be un-biased, with only the trouble makers singled out from either side.

  6. you're talking about rome like baghdad. i visited london in 2007...i was attacked and robbed by an english gang...rome is the most safe european capital after lisbon...shot up!!!! london sucks and it's an horrible city. if you don't want to come, please stay at home...no one forces you to see the final...FORZA BARCA

  7. OH YEAH SURE CUZ ENGLAND DOESNT RIGHT????? THE ONLY REASON WHY NO ONE HERES ABOUT THE THOUSANDS OF STABBINGS THAT OCCUR IN LONDON EACH DAY IS BECAUSE THE ENGLISH PRESS JUST LOVE TO COVER IT UP AND GLORIFY HOW GREAT THE PREMIER LEAGUE IS AS OPPOSED TO THE "Boring and Violent" Serie A. Dont BS please, if I wanted to listen to BS I would watch sky sports news. AKA propaganda a la joseph goebles.

  12. yeh be careful all united fans who are going to rome this is the only friendly warning u united fans will ever get off me so take it. remember what happened to us middlesbrough supporters in the uefa cup 2007 semi final i think it was yeh our fellow fans were stabbed and beaten up my some of the idiots in rome. so be careful one person even got stabbed and died!

  13. Nelly - whether you earn more than me or not you are boring me now...

On the issue of English fans behaving badly, i think that we are unfortunately tarred by Sepp Blatter and Platters racism. If an overseas fan had been stabbed to death (remember the Leeds fan in Turkey if my memory serves me correct) we would have been kicked out of Europe (one way to stop English teams dominating the Champs League). The worst fans in European footie are the Turkish but nothing was or is ever done (i think Blatters assistant at the time was Turkish - might have something to do with it!!!) If FIFA treated everyone the same it would be fine, but the English seem to get the worst treatment...

  14. visca el barca!
funny how it's always mancs who are victims to such great injustices. mi wonders, if they really are such innocent angels and it's the italian ultras that are the devils. maybe it is the other way around, after all mancs are also known as devils. surely when abroad they like to show off and hold true to their name. i just hope rome has enough hospital beds, cuz for every broken window there will be a manc needing a hosptial bed i reckon.

  15. And when exactly did i state all Italian fans as uncivilised animals?
Read what i wrote a little more carefully before you open your ill informed mouth.
As for English fans i stated in my first post that many have behaved awfully abroad also.
Im simply explainig my own experiences when following my club and county in Italy.
And since when does having a view that is differnt to your own bring me down to the level of pensioner assulting riot cop.
I think that it is maybe you who needs to grow up a little flowe.

  16. If you dont have a ticket then you shouldnt be going anyway ,English supporters have gained a reputation for trouble and have been blamed for a lot of it over the years where i tend to beleive its 50-50 and i accept that in some cases there is an overreaction from the police but if you go out there acting a moron then they are not going to put up with it and you have to say why should they, its no good moaning about not being involved ,you all will be tarred with the same brush by the police so if you are going without a ticket then you get what you deserve because you are bound to get caught up in it even if innocent ,remember if you aint there it cant happen. But what sickens me is that the people who do go out for a punch up call themselves FANS they are a joke no true supporter from any club want retards like them in the club anyway they are all numptys and if those that cant resist going for the punch ups ,that will inevitably take place ,should be locked up in Italy and left there not sent home, and banned for life ,the spirit of being able to banter with the opposition has in most cases gone due to these @#$%@s and if you look at the ages of some of these idiots they are in their 30s upwards too what a bunch of stiffs they really are scum so i cant say that it will be a suprise to read that there was trouble but good luck Barca hope you win

  17. Things have changed quite a lot, and this match will be a chance to show it, what happened in the past is past.

I am getting tired of your attitude, just because you were a victim in past events it doesn't mean that you can generalize all italian football fans as uncivilized animals and say that it will always be like this and that they will never change. Should i remind you that Italy's history of football violence is a fraction of the UK's? but what happened? they changed! wow! amaizing! now they behave themselves! awesome isn't it? If it happened to the country with the largets amount of football violence ever why can't it happen in Italy? Things change buddy, I am positive that these things will not happen again, or maybe at least they will not be as serious.
Why I wasted my time trying to have a calm and mature debate with such a muppet is beyond me, for what I care you are no better than that cop who hit that poor old man.

From sfraganosimone, on Wed 20 May 2:28PM
  18. No, I was talking about the last event in rome, not the other ones, yes there were some ultras disguised as police to be able to freely attack english fans, the other event were in the past, things have changed quite a lot from then.

From sfraganosimone, on Wed 20 May 2:13PM
  19. so sfraganosimon let me get this straight.....

In that incident some of the Italian police where not actully police at all, but Italian ultras dressed as police so that they could inflict damage of English supporters?

So I guess that means that when England went to Turin in 97, the same is true.
    Or Chelsea last year?
    Or Arsenal?

What an absoloute load of codswollop.

Also this was not an isolated incident, English football fans have come under increased brutlaity from Italian police for the last 20 years,as i have previously mentioned. A ONE OFF?????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!

and i know it will happen again.....

    dont talk such unifomred drivel

From Michael S, on Wed 20 May 2:09PM
  20. I personally believe that that's what they should do to avoid problems, not threatening to remove the unsecure places from the list of possible locations for these events, but to make the local government pay damages if these things happen, doesn't matter where, doesn't matter who starts them, may it be in Rome, London, Manchester, Bareclona, Moscow, wherever. If, for example, something like this happens in Rome and the local government was forced by the FA to pay damages to each and every fan... which could be 5x what the fans have spent to go there (ticket + flights + accomodation, the local council would have the bleedin army patroling the streets and for sure as hell there wouldn't be any accidents.
