Premier League - Murphy: Liverpool row showed Carra passion

Eurosport - Wed, 20 May 08:21:00 2009

Eurosport-Yahoo! blogger Danny Murphy has backed his former team-mate Jamie Carragher, but thinks Rafa Benitez should congratulate Fergie.

2008-2009 Liverpool Alvaro Arbeloa is confronted by Jamie Carragher as Xabi Alonso intervenes - 0

Jamie Carragher's confrontation with Alvaro Arbeloa against West Brom was a really good moment in many ways because it showed that, even after Liverpool had lost the title, they still had players like Jamie showing the passion and desire to win the match and make sure they finished second.

The passion in Jamie's play over the years has been evident but when he felt that Arbeloa wasn't working at full capacity, letting West Brom back into the game, he reacted in an uncharacteristic way. But it shows what it means to him to keep a clean sheet and finish as high as possible.

It was typical of his passion, but ideally you wouldn't want to show it in such a public way, and it is very unlike him in terms of how he channels his passion and determination.

Normally he would have a quiet word after the game but I think the frustration of losing the title that weekend, having been so close, spilled out. He is an emotional person but the majority of the time he shows it by being a wonderful defender.

I've argued with team-mates on the pitch plenty of times but thankfully it has only ever been words. It is easy to shake hands after and put these things behind you. It is rare for any animosity to carry over after the game.

I expect Jamie and Arbeloa have shaken hands and moved on. In the past when I have argued it has always been sorted out the minute you get in the dressing room.

I don't think the manager will be overly disappointed in him given that it shows that the players care about winning and it is a rare occurrence at Liverpool. I think they are one of the best disciplined teams in Europe. His disappointment will focus mainly on the fact that they lost out on the title after such a good run.

Rafa's reluctance to congratulate Sir Alex was a little bit sad. I think humility is a good quality and our manager at Fulham, Roy Hodgson, has it. He is always complimentary about other teams - players, management and supporters.

The pair may have had their words this season but Rafa should have acknowledged that the Manchester United team have pipped them to the post by playing quality football and now move on to fight another day rather than prolonging an argument between them. It is time to put that to bed.

I'm sure at the start of next season they will get out their swords and start fighting again for the title. I'm well aware of the rivalry between Man U and Liverpool but sometimes you have to show a bit of good grace.

I have kept quiet for so long. I started watching football since 1993 and although i was very young, i came to the conclusion that football was meant to bring people together regardless of ethnicity, gender and skin colour. People who come on here hating and wishing other supporter ill luck should be ashamed of who they have become. Okay i know some of you must have lost a huge chunk of there money or even mortgage betting but ask yourselves, whose fault is it. You should be ashamed of your own pitiful self. I see the crowd in most games wanting to kill the opposition and some you illitrates call it PASSION. That my friends is definitely not passion. Passion is making sure you are in the stadium regardless of what you partner tells you. Passion is buying tickets for games knowing that the next day you might not put food in your mouth. Passion is at the end of every lost game you buy one of your teams merchandise be it a mug or a towel(Although Liverpool throught to WestBrom must have loads). Common people, we have tried hating on each other for decades now and the world is NOT a better place. Lets try the opposite and see how well our lives will turn out to be.
I want the rest of the world to sing with me GLORY GLORY MAN UTD AND THE RED DEVIL MATCHES ON _ _. Complete it and have a nice day.

  12. Carra was right if the guy had've been doing his job then there would be no problem this sort of passion is needed in more players, every player wants to win from the guys who play 5 a side to the guys in the big leagues , Utd fans be ashamed instead of congratulating Liverpool on pushing you until the last few games you rub there faces in defeat this is why you are hated.

  14. I think people get carried away when this sort of thing happens.

When I play for my five aside team the same thing happens. Afterwards in the pub all is forgotten.

Ok so this is a sligtler higer standard, but just shows how much it means to these lads, just like our little 5-aside leage means alot to us!

Im sure Carra and Alvaro have already forgotton the whole thing, its just at this time of the season the hacks are stuggling for stories, so they make a big deal out of thi one

  16. i think carragher is just venting his frustration and rightly so. he and one or two others have worked their b*llocks off this season and for what? Not one trophy or final. I personally would be gutted too and as a true UTD fan, i take my hat off to LFC for pushing us all the way. yeah, its a sweeter victory beating the team which won everything when i was a kid, but ultimately, after 38 games, irrespective of refs/luck/whatever excuses some come up with, the team with the most points and most games won came through in the end. LFC have set a benchmark this year for themselves, it'll be tough for them to exceed it and i think if they can do so, they may just land their 1st league win in a v.long time....

As a United supporter I agree with Dannys coments, he is a player who scored many times against us to win matches for liverpool and for that he gets my respect. And jamie is a great player and the kind of heart that a team needs keep fighting till the final whistle, I feel sorry for him as he will never win the title with that team they are just not compatible, go on Jamie ask for a transfer to united I would have you there anytime.
