Premier League - Newcastle lose Bassong appeal

Eurosport - Wed, 20 May 07:12:00 2009

Relegation-threatened Newcastle have lost their appeal against Sebastien Bassong's dismissal.

2008-2009 Newcastle United Sebastien Bassong is sent off against Fulham - 0

The 22-year-old Frenchman was shown a straight red card by referee Howard Webb after tangling with Fulham striker Diomansy Kamara.

Bassong will now miss the club's final Premier League game of the season at Aston Villa.

Because it was his second red card of the season, he will serve a two-match ban with immediate effect, ruling Bassong out of the first game of the 2009/10 campaign as well.

Meanwhile, Michael Owen could feature for relegation-threatened Newcastle in the clash with Villa.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker, 29, was unavailable for the defeat to Fulham after sustaining a groin injury in training but could be ready to play some part on Sunday.

Magpies boss Alan Shearer said: "He had a scan on Monday and there is no serious injury so we're hopeful he'll be involved on Sunday."

Newcastle go into the match third from bottom and on the brink of slipping into the Championship, with Middlesbrough, Hull and Sunderland also in danger of joining already-relegated West Brom.

  3. What annoys me is it is the players on the pitch that have put the toon in this position. Alot of them have no heart its just easy money. However if the toon do go down they will demand a transfer and move onto their next money pot instead of trying to right the @#$% they have played all season and put the club back where it should be and thats in the premiership. Lets see if they have the guts and the fight against Villa

  7. The red card was never going to be overturned. Our energies should have gone into an appeal against Mark Viduka's disallowd goal-that was the real disgrace of Saturday's game.Howard Webb should be dropped.Howay the lads!

  8. No matter what anyone says, NewCastle is a big club. Maybe not as big as Man United or Liverpool but it has a great history and great achievements and almost-achievements -greatness is also about contesting for the titles and not only winning them. The proof the club is great is that someone like Shearer without any experience in coaching was keen to come and try to help. Would anyone do that for Leeds for instance? I truly hope Newcastle does not drop to the lower grade, but even if it stays they need to ge their act together otherwise it will be another battle next year and so on until the unavoidable will happen. Ashley is the big problem and him around is a serious problem. If he is staying, and I thik no one is keen on getting into his dirty shoes, he needs to start thinking INSIDE the square instead of trying to invent new easy of managing a football club. Most managers get it right but few attempt to ignore that a football club has a lot of non-business elements associated with it, just like music and painting. These elements could be lethal if not accounted for, and Ashley ignored them. And boy oh boy, how did he tihnk gettng Wise was a good idea? The guy buys players after seeing them on youtube... WTF

  12. pound for pound newcastle have a much better squad than villa and were newcastle playing well we'd be saying villa will be lucky to get a draw, as it stands i hope the players decide to keep them up. i don't think the back room staff help at all, ashley and his entire team need to leave if newcastle are ever going to have a chance at being where they should in the premier league( top 4). if ashley hadn't brought a no hoper like dennis wise in to try direct an experianced manager like keegan by forcing signings keegan didnt want and didnt fit with the team or trying to sell his players out from under him newcastle would have been challenging for a european place now instead of having to battle just to stay in the premiership. kk had the team playing how they can play and giving other teams something to worry about and then that dumb fat moron had to @#$% things up and stick his nose in when he's knows nothing about football and neither does dennis wise so basically if they manage to stay up then they need to get an entirely new board in place then maybe tehy'll be able to make their squad of top notch players perform like they can

Newcastle are not a Championship Team,

  14. I do not think they way villa are playing if the Newcastle team play with the same passion as their supporters it is beyond them to get a DRAW I cant see them winning as I do not see Villa being unable to score

I know many are worried about Man U playing a second string against Hull but trying to be realistic I do not see a Man u second team that Held Everton loosing to Hull

What are Chelsea going to do against Sunderland? they have more of a dilemma I feel as their second team is not as strong as Man U's

I think Middlesbrough are doomed and if the chairman does not get rid of Southgate now he will drop like a stone out of the championship IMHO
so I do feel it is a fight between Hull and Newcastle and frankly If the players fight as hard as everybody else at Newcastle they will managed to stay up it is firmly in their hands I would say they really need to win to make sure and that will be hard away from St James but it is backs to the wall even mice come out fighting when cornered
so Good luck and may the team who want it more survive

  15. Post 115 Geordietree. I don't think changing the foreign policy will make any difference to the top clubs. Instead of spending big abroad they will just spend it at home instead. All the best English players will go to the top money clubs in the same way as the top European players do. They will also invest more heavilly in their youth policies and attract the best kids. Money matters! Man U have always had money, Chelsea recently, and watch Man C buy this summer. Only exception possibly being Wenger.

  19. i honestly think that if you draw a line through the premiership table, roughly six teams down, then all clubs below are piss poor....

so mackems, smoggies, whatever else, its nothing to be proud of whoever goes down and whoever stays up, the gulf between the top 5 or 6 teams is too big, and thats in all european leagues (unless its scotland and its only two top teams)

sort out the foreign player policies and lets get the premier league fairer and see what managers are made of......

toon army toon army toon army............well we need a voice or 2 sunday !!!!
