Premier League - Newcastle lose Bassong appeal
Eurosport - Wed, 20 May 07:12:00 2009
Relegation-threatened Newcastle have lost their appeal against Sebastien Bassong's dismissal.
The 22-year-old Frenchman was shown a straight red card by referee Howard Webb after tangling with Fulham striker Diomansy Kamara.
Bassong will now miss the club's final Premier League game of the season at Aston Villa.
Because it was his second red card of the season, he will serve a two-match ban with immediate effect, ruling Bassong out of the first game of the 2009/10 campaign as well.
Meanwhile, Michael Owen could feature for relegation-threatened Newcastle in the clash with Villa.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker, 29, was unavailable for the defeat to Fulham after sustaining a groin injury in training but could be ready to play some part on Sunday.
Magpies boss Alan Shearer said: "He had a scan on Monday and there is no serious injury so we're hopeful he'll be involved on Sunday."
Newcastle go into the match third from bottom and on the brink of slipping into the Championship, with Middlesbrough, Hull and Sunderland also in danger of joining already-relegated West Brom.

Didn`t surprise me.
I hope NUFC is not going to be relegated, I am going to miss them if they do . I don't think they deserve to go down ...
From a Chelsea fan.

PHIL
why are you making such an a(rse) of yourself.
It may've been a while back but NUFC have won countless trophies AND more recently, they have also played Champions League football pal - how many English clubs can say that!
Erm, 5 or 6 tops, what's your club's history!
hellaandmal
Here's the deal: hull & NUFC win, safc lose (which is a given btw) - how foolish are you and the rest gonna look!
oliver #94 - return to the glory days, what days are those? travesty if newcastle go down, why? who gives a 5hit? only the deluded plums who turn up every week. no one else cares. newcastle have themselves to blame, small club with lots of fans who have too much expectation. rich history? do me a favour. who gives a @#$% if you beat barcelona, was it in the champions league final? you are worse then liverpool for thinking you deserve success and you will end up like leeds and forest etc, too good to go down my ar53!
newcastles only rich history is they have never won anything, and thats history aint it? watch all the rats leave the sinking ship after your pied piper gos back to the bbc.
A number of messages say we will miss the maggies if they go down ( I don,t think so ) also its a long time since they played entertaining football and for the last couple of seasons, they,ve struggled to be average! F.T.M.

This is a wind up surely pal!
As for you Holly s(hitehawk), we had enough of your drivel last night, now get yourself either sobered up, or off to bed!
achunkyjones - if you think those clubs are bigger than Newcastle, you're either stupid, deluded, or both. No one has ever said the club deserve to be in the Premiership, merely that they are a club who have a rich history and are in need of returning to the glory days. It would be a travesty for English football were they to go down. How many teams have Beaten Barcelona, with a striker scoring a hat-trick? A true football fan would want to see good football, whoever was playing it.
if u go dwn r u all guna start supporting sunderland next season, lol. the championship ent going ta be easy u know. with teams like Reading, preston, swansea, cardiff, palace and QPR u guys wont go straight bk up
howard webb is a @#$%. he should leave football altogether,or risk a collapse in fereeing standards the guy is a joke.
