Premier League - Newcastle lose Bassong appeal

Eurosport - Wed, 20 May 07:12:00 2009

Relegation-threatened Newcastle have lost their appeal against Sebastien Bassong's dismissal.

2008-2009 Newcastle United Sebastien Bassong is sent off against Fulham - 0

The 22-year-old Frenchman was shown a straight red card by referee Howard Webb after tangling with Fulham striker Diomansy Kamara.

Bassong will now miss the club's final Premier League game of the season at Aston Villa.

Because it was his second red card of the season, he will serve a two-match ban with immediate effect, ruling Bassong out of the first game of the 2009/10 campaign as well.

Meanwhile, Michael Owen could feature for relegation-threatened Newcastle in the clash with Villa.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker, 29, was unavailable for the defeat to Fulham after sustaining a groin injury in training but could be ready to play some part on Sunday.

Magpies boss Alan Shearer said: "He had a scan on Monday and there is no serious injury so we're hopeful he'll be involved on Sunday."

Newcastle go into the match third from bottom and on the brink of slipping into the Championship, with Middlesbrough, Hull and Sunderland also in danger of joining already-relegated West Brom.

  5. Im not a toon fan and never will be I hope they stay up because in reality they deserve to stay up for there loyal fans, I dont think any club could boast such loyal following no matter what the hurdle is in front of them.
Always have a great atmosphere home and away, and the Prem would be a dull place without them, the people in control of the club have sunk you when you should have been building for the future 3 managers in a season is a joke, L/pool fan.

  6. I personally did not watch the match, should it have been a red card? I know what referee`s are like giving cards that they shouldn`t.These referee`s have started to go bonkers non of them have not made a mistake in a match.

you are a prime example; what a loser - you are the type of person that gives football supporters a bad name, a real throwback to the 1970's and 80's. The game does not need cretins like you; do you have any friends, do you actually go to any games - my guess is NOT, to both counts.
I'd sooner be dead than be you.

  10. I have no problems with people coming on here and criticising us at NUFC, especially mackems as i know it is indoctrinated in them from birth.
What i do have a problem with is:
    a) - if you aren't from the area what makes you think you are such an expert on all things NUFC - you actually know NOWT.
    b) - why you never tell us why you hate us so much; you never provide ANY rationale or logic for your bilge.
    c) - who YOU support - you are always too cowardly to say..
    d) - where you get all this mis-information from (my guess is The Sun)
If/when we go, i bet you are still spouting your bilge.
    Why?
    Isn't it obvious?
    Good old fashioned, plain and simple . . . . . . . . . . . . J E A L O U S Y!!!!!!
Jealous of our passion for the game; jealous that your clubs are always ignored.

  20. Owen used to be a good player and hit his peak was about 2001-2004 when he left it was because Benitez didnt rate him he wasnt No1 Anymore, so he ran his contract down and left, for an English abundant Madrid side at the time Beckham Woodgate McManaman and Owen Its fair to say none of them where a great hit in the Star studded Madrid side at the time, Woodgate bad Injuries Owen injuries and 4 choice but scored a lot then he played.
Owens Downfall has been his Greed first and foremost Money has always been his goal and his cart horse legs.
Send him to the Glue factory or Spurs to pasture.
