Premier League - Newcastle lose Bassong appeal

Eurosport - Wed, 20 May 07:12:00 2009

Relegation-threatened Newcastle have lost their appeal against Sebastien Bassong's dismissal.

2008-2009 Newcastle United Sebastien Bassong is sent off against Fulham - 0

The 22-year-old Frenchman was shown a straight red card by referee Howard Webb after tangling with Fulham striker Diomansy Kamara.

Bassong will now miss the club's final Premier League game of the season at Aston Villa.

Because it was his second red card of the season, he will serve a two-match ban with immediate effect, ruling Bassong out of the first game of the 2009/10 campaign as well.

Meanwhile, Michael Owen could feature for relegation-threatened Newcastle in the clash with Villa.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker, 29, was unavailable for the defeat to Fulham after sustaining a groin injury in training but could be ready to play some part on Sunday.

Magpies boss Alan Shearer said: "He had a scan on Monday and there is no serious injury so we're hopeful he'll be involved on Sunday."

Newcastle go into the match third from bottom and on the brink of slipping into the Championship, with Middlesbrough, Hull and Sunderland also in danger of joining already-relegated West Brom.

  1. rufus.gpig - It really does man. Thanks. On a lighter note, anybody saying we need Keegan back, have a word with yourselves. I didn't want him back first time because he was basically finished in football. The only thing he had left was a reputation for walking out, which he duly did. Shocker. Michael Owen is past his best, but probably would score more at another club with better service (20 a season is a bit optimistic). The club's crumble isn't down to Mike Ashley, Kevin Keegan, Denis Wise, Sam Allerdyce, Chris Hughton, Joe Kinnear or anybody else. It's down to four or five years of steady decline without any attempt at the consistency required to succeed. Championship here we come. Good luck Wolves, Birmingham and whoever else comes up. We'll be back I hope.

  2. Shocking i was at the fulham game and bassongs red card should never have been. The fulham players foot clipped bassongs knee and he leaped on the floor. Our goal should have counted aswell. Nolan didnt even touch shcwartzer let alone grab onto him. Howard Webb best referee in the prm your having a laugh. Jammy Cockneys. Owens and waist of time and space. Sunderland 4 the drop.

  3. I think the majority of newcastles fans can hold their hands up and say that no way have we been good enough this season, however I think owen also needs to do the same and say that he hasn't had the best of seasons either. I am constantly surprised by the amount of times I see people post on here simply to have a go at people. It seems a little ridiculous when at no point is every other team/manager/player ever perfect. I am astonished that someone can comment and say that we didnt support keegan, however I can only assume that they are not a Newcastle fan or they would be hard pushed to make that comment. By all means have a go, have a dig at the fact we havent been good enough but do it with some dignity instead of making yourselves look like narrow minded little children, throwing their toys out of the premiership pram.

  4. Owen doesn't suit the way newcastle play, they haven't any good wide men who put the ball in the box for him, same would of been for gary liniker, he was a box player but he had good men to feed him the ball in the box at different clubs, if owen isn't getting the service course he wont do well, put him in liverpool's team or man u and he'll be a 20 a season goal scorer again (if fit).

  5. Owen is class...and its been said he cannot score because the quality passes to give him the chance are non existent.

You watch him go to another club and start scoring.

Newcastles problem is thwe fact the fans didn't support keagan when he needed them...instead they flocked back to thweir seats and the fatmna was delighted.

Newcastle need keagan you better hope he comes back

why would anyone pay 17 million a week and 100k in wages for a goal poacher, surly a more creative player is worth more...

His injury prone to, I was praying to the Lord that Mclaren would drop the wheezle, but he never did, and then ginger fringe lost his job.

  14. For all those whinging about United fielding a weakened team, they did for other games in the season as did Liverpool when playing some weak teams. Apart from which if any of you were lucky enough to have a team who were League Champions and having to play the final of the Champions League three days after a match that was meaningless to your team, you would expect them to play a weakened side. The Champions league is worth millions, would you expect your team to throw millions away because of some battle at the bottom of the table. Course not you idiots

  15. LFC placed an 8 million bid to Real Madrid for Owen , Owen was desperate Real excepted this bid. Then Geordies came in with a bid of 17 million!!! plus 100k plus in wages P/W(great piece of business). Owen clearly didnt want to play for Newcastle from day one (because he's a winner). Other than stop changing your manager every five minutes. You should concentrate on buying players that want to play and be successful at Newcastle, perhaps looking down a few leagues.

  17. I think the Newcastle fans are misguided blaming Owen for there problems. He did it for Liverpool and he did it for Real Madrid best goal per game ration fact!!! Owen is a true striker which is a paocher and he can't poach if the people supplying the crucial ball are @#$% and dont have what it takes. When Owen leaves and joins a club with better service he will start to score again. Its not about form its about service and he does not get the service he needs. Newcastle are in this position because the players you have don't have any heart for the club, The only player who show's grit and determination is Taylor. The best thing about Newcastle United is the fans fact!!!
