Injury jinx hits Magpies

Wed, 20 May 15:10:49 2009

Alan Shearer is keeping everything crossed as he prepares to send his patched-up Newcastle team into their make-or-break battle at Aston Villa.

Having failed in their appeal to have Sebastien Bassong's red card against Fulham, and therefore the two-match suspension he will start at the weekend, overturned, the Magpies will be without their most impressive defender this season at Villa Park.

In addition, Habib Beye, who has run the Frenchman a close second, has been given only a slim chance of shaking off a hamstring injury, while the club's only specialist left-back, Jose Enrique, is rated at only 50-50.

Assistant manager Iain Dowie said: "The results of Michael Owen's scan are very positive, but we will have to wait and see. It will certainly go to the wire.

"Andy Carroll has got an ankle ligament injury and definitely won't be fit. He did it in training - it's very unfortunate.

"Habib is very, very doubtful and Jose Enrique's 50-50 at best. But we have got Shola Ameobi, and young Nile Ranger comes into the frame."

  6. In normal circumstances you would expect a team to give their all; a case of, 'if we're going down, we're going down fighting!!!'
This lot don't know the meaning of the word fight; no backbone, no heart, no conscience, no pride . . . oh yes, and a little matter of no football skill, craft or nous!
Nevertheless, i am still predicting draw at least - surely they've got to give it a go man, they simply have to!!!!

  9. This looks convincing for us...not. With Bassong banned and Beye now seeming unlikely that leaves a gap in the defence to be filled and any bets on that place being filled by Colocinni of all people?! Shola is useless half the time, so can't see him doing much against villa. I reckon our only hope is Martins, with a little luck we might actually get a goal or 2 and if we are very lucky and end up with a draw, we just need hull to lose to Man U and we will be safe. Anyway...no matter how much it sucks to be a Newcastle fan at the moment I will still support them no matter what league we are in, Come on Newcastle!!!!
