James Morrison believes West Brom would be acquiring "a top player" and a "real leader" if they sign his Scotland team-mate Barry Ferguson.

Albion are showing an interest in signing the Rangers midfielder as they look to rebuild a squad capable of making a quickfire return to the Barclays Premier League.

Morrison said: "Barry is obviously a top player and has been for years. With his experience, he would be, if he signed, a great asset."

He added: "That is what we have been lacking, a real leader. I think experience is the key for us.

"I think the fans would certainly be excited if he was to sign, given the events of the past week."

Meanwhile Albion boss Tony Mowbray is confident West Brom midfielder Graham Dorrans will be fit for the start of pre-season training in early July.

Dorrans missed the conclusion of the campaign with a broken metatarsal which was confirmed after a second scan.

The former Livingston player has been one of the few plus points in a disappointing season after breaking into the squad on a regular basis after Christmas.

He is expected to have a key part to play in Albion's attempt to regain their top-flight status at the first attempt.

Mowbray said: "Dorrans will be fit for the start of pre-season. He has been to see a specialist and he is confident that, if we just leave things alone, it will heal in a few weeks."
