Fri 20 Jun, 01:15 PM

Sunderland are optimistic defender Paul McShane will be fit for the start of the new Premier League season after going under the knife. The Republic of Ireland international has had an operation after fracturing a knee-cap while on holiday.

Black Cats' club doctor and head of medical Glenn Rae told the club's official website: "It was a very complex fracture but we managed to get Paul back with us straight away so he could get the best possible attention.

"The operation was a success and Paul will now undergo intensive rehabilitation during the course of pre-season and we're hopeful he will be able to return by the start of the new season."
