Scolari Plans To Win Over Players

Fri 20 Jun, 05:09 PM

Luiz Felipe Scolari will shun the London nightlife and build a close relationship with his players by sharing a laugh and joke with them.

The Brazilian is set to take up his role at Stamford Bridge on July 1 but despite fears of a management style built on strict discipline, Scolari claims he would much prefer to get to know his new squad in a light-hearted atmosphere.

Scolari's Portugal bowed out of Euro 2008 on Thursday night after losing 3-2 to Germany and although he has been out of club management for seven years, he insists there is no danger of being out of his depth.

The 59-year-old also promised his squad a few laughs along the way as he prepares to take control at Stamford Bridge.

"I spent 20 years as a club manager, so I think I know the ins and outs of club management," said Scolari.

"First I look for technical qualities, then personal qualities and how they work as a unit because we are a team.

"I feel comfortable anywhere in the world as I establish good relations with people surrounding me.

"I like to play, I like jokes and I like to work with my players in a good atmosphere.

"But I don't like high society. I don't like to go to parties. I'm shy but I have a good relationship with all my players and that is the most important thing."

Scolari may not be taking charge until July 1, but he looks set to sanction two departures from the club.

Veteran midfielder Claude Makelele could be the first out of the door after reports in France claimed he was on the brink of joining Paris St Germain.

The 35-year-old has one year left on his current contract and had initial talks with Chelsea about extending his deal until 2011.

But that was before the sacking of Avram Grant and the appointment of Scolari as his replacement.

Winger Shaun Wright-Phillips is also understood to be on the brink of agreeing a £10 million switch to Portsmouth.

The England player found himself out of favour at Chelsea under Grant and played little part in their Champions League campaign.

Chelsea would be happy to cash in on the winger to help fund their anticipated spending spree under Scolari.

The timing of Scolari's appointment by Chelsea was criticised on Friday by the Portugal Football Federation (FPF).

Chelsea confirmed his appointment on June 11 - shortly after Portugal had beaten the Czech Republic in their second group game in Euro 2008.

FPF president Gilberto Madail insisted that Chelsea's timing showed a lack of respect and the Blues could have informed them before hand.

"It wasn't the best moment for us for Chelsea to announce Scolari's appointment," said Madail.

"I know Scolari had nothing to do with it and I was surprised, not by the appointment - because Scolari is a great coach - but at the timing chosen.

"I wish Chelsea would have consulted us before so that we could have chosen a better time. The club could've told the federation in advance.

"We tried (to keep him) ... but I felt Scolari really wanted a change in his life. Even if we found (the money from sponsors), we wouldn't get close to the conditions offered to him."

  1. People only talk of lampard not being loyal to his team but they forget the proud C-RON of Man U. That fella needs a whack on his boot to make him humnle a little.See him in his free kicks and the steps behind then you will know how proud he is but the interesting thing about it all is that he will kick the ball towards God.How is he loyal to his club when he is fame hungry thus announcing his interest for aonther club in the verge of something where is soccer driving to? to hell may be.That is what blaiter should be concern with not the 6+5 stuff.Tell C-RON to learn from his big brother the Brazilian RON.

  3. Lets face it !!!! how long has lampard held out on signing the best contract around ..... well lets see ..... 1. need to deal with american tour indiscretion, 2.continued contact negs all last summer !!! no joy 3.end of this seanon we will negotiate at the end of the season...not.. 4. we will negotiate after the encland frindlies ,,,,not (just a point of not Jose hadnt accepted any managerial post at this point ) " days after Jose accepted the inter job LAMPS was his ..... funny all that .... seems frank was just waiting to make sure Jose offered him the job..... call me synical...... just make a joke of it seeing him kiss the badge... My vote for the next manager would have been either John Neal or Ranerie .... both took us to great heights with a fantastic potential .... on a shoe string.... "give them the budget what could they do !!!!!"

  4. Lampard god i hate him he should just go to man u or whatever place he wants to that scum is not loyal to the club so he be better out of the club ( the main reason i think that Ballack And Sheva didnt come to live is because of Drogba and Lampard those two control the players and they should get lost ) sheva should start with ballack each game and yall will see that sheva and ballack can create magic if u give them the chance and they did show that sheva showed us his moments of pure class and so did ballack !! i hope Scolari can change chelsea into a better team not just knock the ball to drgoba and let him rung through defence
