Klitschko beats Chagaev by TKO

Ukraine's Vladimir Klitschko retained his world heavyweight titles by handing Ruslan Chagaev his first defeat thanks to a technical knockout after the ninth round in Germany.
Klitschko, 33, held on to his IBF, IBO and WBO belts when the referee stopped the fight before the start of the 10th round in front of 61,000 fans with the Uzbek WBA champion-in-recess bleeding from a large cut above his left eye.
Standing 1.99 metres tall, Klitschko initially held the challenger, who is 14 centimetres shorter, at bay with his longer reach before knocking his opponent down with a powerful left-right combination midway through the second round.
Unable to get close to the champion, Chagaev, who had a 25-0-1 record going into the fight, took a series of punishing jabs that slowly chipped away at his defences.
He suffered a three centimetre cut above his left eye in the sixth round but battled on at the Schalke 04 football stadium.
Chagaev, 30, who did not face WBA champion Nikolai Valuev after the Russian pulled out of their fight late last month because the Uzbek had the hepatitis B virus, managed to come back and landed a couple of body blows.
But Klitschko dominated in the eighth and ninth rounds, forcing Chagaev to the ropes and landing dozens of punches as his shaken opponent's eye bled profusely.
Referee Eddie Cotton inspected the wound after the ninth round and decided to stop the fight in favour of the Ukrainian whose impressive performance takes him to 53-3-0.
Klitschko, whose brother Vitaly holds the WBC crown, was initially scheduled to fight David Haye before the Briton pulled out with an injury earlier this month.

Its a shame Haye gave up that fight,otherwise we'd witnessed him destroyed by Klitchko!Big mouth,loud words and pulled of the fight when realised did a big,big mistake!
daniel.gwynne, chagaev was already in training to fight the bigger . . . . not necessarily the better . . . . . valuev prior to that bout being called off about 3-4 weeks ago.
Chageav would or should of been in near top condition for that fight, so the fight gave no one fighter an advantage as klitshko was also due to fight haye who also had a short time to prepare for his new opponent. I hope Haye can back up his bousts. I believe he is a better fighter than chagaev, BUT, haye is a bit chinny & hasnt fought skilled or methodical fighters the size of the klitsko's. Its gonna be a good fight either way, but haye needs to concentrate on his tactic in the ring & not in the press conferences
Looks like you called it almost spot on Jack . I have to admit , i really didnt think he would win by stoppage , but after this , i think Wlad is the better of the 2 brothers. That was a masterclass against a top 5 fighter. Credit where credit is due , he looks the best heavyweight since Lewis.
just wondering how long chagaev had to prepare for this fight was it about 3-4 weeks and he can still go nine rounds with "the best heavyweight around" not bad really. David Haye knocks this bum out inside 4 rounds his straight right and left hook are too fast and explosive for Klitschsko, Haye will can counter that left jab all day Wlad leaves it out too long and carries his right too low its ok against shorter slower fighters lie chagaev or peter but Haye is alot faster and explosive

worst heavyweiht boxer ever, the rest are fodder......bring back ali. holyfield, tyson..at least we saw excitement for our money? id rather watch paint dry.
comment 11, be fair lewis was past his best when he beat klitschko, lewis was talking of retirement before the klitschko fight and when a fighter starts talking of retirement his heart is not in the game anymore..

As for comparisons - only time will tell. The only thing we saw is that Vitaly sent Lewis to retirement. Pity.
If Haye goes up against this guy he will get ten sorts knocked out of him.
The klitschko brothers are the best of a bad bunch but they would never have beaten the likes of tyson, holyfield, or lewis in there prime..fact!!
