Formula One is unlikely to split in two despite teams planning to set up their own championship, according to FIA president Max Mosley.
"Always with these things in the end there is a compromise because they can't afford not to run in the Formula One world championship, and we would be very reluctant to have that without them," he told BBC TV at the British Grand Prix.
The Briton, whose own future at the helm of the sport's governing body has been questioned, said some of the manufacturers would probably leave anyway.
"They are going to find it very difficult to keep things going, so we will lose one or two, maybe three manufacturer teams," he said.
"We need new teams to make up the space, but the great traditional teams, and I include Ferrari in that, they need to be there, and they will be there for sure. It will get sorted out."
Despite Mosley's conciliatory tone, the FIA announced on Friday that they were taking legal action against the champions for breach of contract.
Mosley indicated he was not losing much sleep over the current crisis, generally considered the most serious to have hit the championship in 60 years of existence.
"I don't take it as seriously as some people do because it is all posturing and posing, and it will all stop some time between the beginning of 2010 and March 2010 with the first race, it will all settle down and everybody will go racing," he said.
"We did all of this back in 1981. Bernie (Ecclestone) and I ran a rebel series. We started the World Federation of Motorsport, had a whole calendar of races and we actually ran what the FIA described as a pirate race.
"But in the end we settled with the FIA and it was all peace in our time. We went much further than these people at the moment are talking about."
Mosley, who hinted he was likely to stand for re-election when his term of office runs out in October, rebuffed those foes calling for his head and said it was a "complete myth" that he was the problem.
"I'm really not the issue. What it is is that they want to take over the governance of the sport from the FIA and have it themselves, and then they want to take over the money from Bernie and have that for themselves," he said.
"The first thing they have to do is get rid of me, but then whoever replaced me would be exactly the same. He would defend the interests of the FIA because the championship belongs to them."
He added: "They (the teams) are not confronting any individual, they're confronting an organisation, challenging the governing body of motor sport, but they will not succeed."

I agree 100% this is why he buys women for sex. He was born from two evil people he Satan child from hell.
"From marinaro4from.chile" What have Lewis, to do with this subject? It's about Mosley and his dictatorial run outfit FIA. This subject as nothing what so ever to do with McLaren or Lewis Hamilton. Are you Mosley? The teams want to leave his dictatorship and form their own Championship. Mosley is a half-wit pervert.
Well...well.....Bernie has now said that the British GP WILL go to Silverstone if Donnington doesn't happen.....the've now got their act together apparently and he would find it acceptable....how gracious of the man.
Max says that the row is all about power (the teams have the temerity to want to have some say in how F1 is run).....well he is certainly right there....HIS power.
Limiting expenses in F1 is a good principle and rather 'a propos' under the economic circumstances. It levels the playing field and makes the competition more interesting for the public.
It's how FIA is proposing to do it that is at the root of the problem. FIA is actually not proposing but imposing.
Imposing a spending cap will not work. It's not enforceable unless you create an Army Corps of Accountants that will swoop down on the books of manufacturers. We don't need more bureaucracy, please!
This two-tier system could have been born only in the twisted mind of a lawyer. It will not clearly reward excellence as any competition should. It will make things confusing for the public.
The way to limit spending is to restrict the use of existing expensive technologies. Say, carbon use limited to only a few designated parts of the car or 6 cylinders engines only etc.
Sorry, that ist word, PLAYS, not palys, eye exam this week, I am not kidding...

Ecclestone is a lepracone and mosleys a dirty sex fiend and the both got so much money neither no what joe public wants. in all fairness how do the expect teams to agree to a 40 mil budget when they have ran there teams on 3,4, and 5 times that in years gone by id like to see them move to a 3 bed semi in croydon and eat smart price beans for tea they wouldnt be to happy either i think

Cookie monster says..who eata alla ma cookies?

Jensen continues to wipe the floor with all the smug heirarchy..
F1 continues to drag itself down the road to purgatory.
Ecclestone thinks he is some kind of god but in fact we all know he is a jumped up little SHlT that suffers from small person syndrome
Following Bernie's comments..."go and ask Max..."
Now Max's comments....."I think the British GP will be at Silverstone....."
Do I detect a split between these fine upstanding principled individuals ?
he should step down, he's a fascist anyway.
Moseley should step down. It's only his mum and Nick Wirth, who is his godson, that want him to stay.
This has happened before...
Last time I seem to remember that the FIA 'won' with two ploys...
1) It is via the FIA that race meetings / drivers are insured against public liability - the FIA would withdraw this cover for the breakaway series and it would be difficult to find an alternative
2) The FIA threatened any circuit hosting a breakaway event with the wihdrawal of its FIA circuit permit; such circuits would then be unable to host any other motor sport.
After much posing and blustering on both sides, a deal will be done and there will be no breakaway.
F1 once again looks like a bunch of squabbling kiddies.
BERT DON'T SLAP MR HAMILTONS SON, HE IS A FINE BOY AND A CREDIT TO F1. MCLAREN IS SUCH A FINE TEAM AND HAS DISCOVERED A GREAT TALENT IN MR HAMILTONS SON.
