Ajax defender Thomas Vermaelen has completed his move to Arsenal.
The Belgium international has joined the Gunners on a long-term contract in a deal worth up to £10 million according to the Dutch club.
Manager Arsene Wenger said: "Thomas is a great signing for Arsenal and we are all delighted that he is joining us.
"Thomas is a solid performer with good experience of Champions League and UEFA Cup football and is also a regular with the Belgium national team.
"Thomas is primarily a left-footed centre back, but he's multi-functional and can also play at left back.
"He is strong technically with a positive winner's attitude and I have no doubt his arrival will strengthen our team. Thomas Vermaelen will be a huge asset to Arsenal."
Vermaelen, who is 23 and was Ajax captain, commented: "I'm just so happy to be joining Arsenal. This is a great club with a world class manager, high quality players and a fantastic stadium.
"Everything is set up for Arsenal to be very successful for years to come and I joined this Club because I know Arsenal will be challenging for trophies.
"I have had a good taste of the Champions League during my time with Ajax and this is something I am looking forward to experiencing again with Arsenal.
"I'm also looking forward to playing in the English Premier League, which for me, is the best league in the world. Also, I just want to assure the Arsenal fans that I will give everything for this club and I hope we can enjoy winning some trophies together next season."

Why are Arsenal signing a player who we don't even know anything about?
Just because he played for Ajax of Amsterdam, doesn't mean he could cope playing for us.
If Arsenal used the money sensibly, we could've sign Micah Richards of Manchester City.
Richards can win so many tackles and he is a born leader at the heart of the Manchester City defence and he can score goals as well.
I don't think Thomas Vermaelen would last long with Arsenal and if we had sense we should've sign Richards of Manchester City.
caxidon2007 @ 130. i understand your fears, but was Henry, Viera,Reyes, etc. not called average players when they signed for Arsenal?. Wenger is an intelligent and meticulous man who looks before leaping. watch out he might suceed in bringing Felipe Melo of Fiorentina and Udinese's Gokhan Inler to strenghten the midfield. and also i belive Arsenal will be much more stronger come next season.
Mr arsene wenger go for rudi vanistoroy at real madrid.
And Melo would be a very decent signing, he is an agressive defensive mid, he got like 17 yellow and a few reds in serie a. He's got presence. He's bout 24 or 25, so he is near enough at his peak. We need a player like him in centre mid.
He is a decent signing. But that is all he is, decent. He is young and will need to gain experience in the premier league. We still need bigger players, like, micah richards for centre back, and a holding player like Essien. But Wenger, has to get rid of bendtner, or at least put him on loan at an italian or a spanish club for a few seasons.
vermaelen is an average player in a dying league in holland.arsene should be looking at lucio at b/munich and make an offer 4 the lad if b/munich are looking to sell. Also at huntaalar from real to replace adebayor the rattle snake; Who thinks he is bigger than the club. Also arsene should get rid of silvestre/gallas/rosicky/bendenar/adebayor.Replace them with lucio/huntaalar/steven taylor of newcasle(could be next adams)and a strong holding midfielder no nonsense player.UP the gooners/keep playing the best football in the World.
Good Luck with the Gunners I hope you have a long and succesful Spell with this great team
Yeah!nice buy 4 arsenal sell gallas that useless player to other team
i feel this is a very good signing ! galas is childish and is getting older now so we need some 1 like this who is well able to fill his boots ! i think we need another strong defender such as yaya-toray !!! he would be a gerat addition 2 da team and his brother could teach him the ropes !! arsenal is in for a very big season next year and will be bringin silver wear back 2 da right side of london ! arsenal 4 life !!
i wish professor arsene will go for more qaulity players to invade PL and CHAMPIONS LEAGUE next season, in midfield department either mascherano, john mikel obi or yaya toure. foward department GIOVINCCO of juventus(he'll be a good trade). striker either pato of ac milan or benzema of lyon. another natural central defender like hangeland buying felipe mello will be a waste of money as well as wesely sneijder of real madrid even schweinstiger of munich they'll be all waste of buck, consequently some players will be offload likes of diaby, adebayor, van persie, william gallas and bendtner. emmanuel eboue'll be draw back as a subsitute to sagna
Arsene please buy Schweinsteiger...he will be great for gunners.
I like the signing. Kudos to Wenger for getting Vermaelen. Although I keep reading that it means the end of Toure. I really hope this isn't true. I'd rather Gallas be gone because of his childish attitude than Toure.
Vermaelen is a very good central defender, good in the air and at his feet and we have been missing a player like him since Adams,Bould and Keown, lets hope he plugs some of the holes we have developed since those players retired, but we do need another midfeild player who can track back too,Come on Arsenal, back to the top next season :)
Welcome my man vermaelen!! good club to pick, and trust me your gonna succeed here and take arsenal to next level.
ARMCHAIRS!
regards to *jeuebi's* comment about vaermelen, he's a world class central defender in class of chellini of juventus i believe he's a big buy otherwise boost to arsenal team. consequently a defensive midfielder inclass of mascherano of liverpool or john mikel obi of chelsea is needed in d team as well a prolific striker like karim benzema of lyon or pato of ac milan, i believe with these class of players in d squad they must grab trophy(ies) in coming season
129 @ jeuebi, i can appreciate your fears and concern as an Arsenal fan, also it is important to note that the world is full of so many fantastic footballers. Wenger might not be the love of everyone because he does not buy names but quality. ( Henry, Viera, Overmars, Kanu, Anelka,Willtord,Fabregas) to mention a few...., Thomas is a great footballer, a left-footed centre back,he is multi-functional and can also play at left back. He is strong technically with a positive winner’s attitude and I have no doubt his arrival will help our team. He has Experience, as a former captain at Ajax.
To comment 69, Arshavin was the outstanding player in the euros(bar David Villa). There was a host of clubs after him when I was watching the Russian beat Holland, i thought that Arshavin would fit into Arsenal just perfect. Signing him was a no brainer, Arsene Wenger almost didn't get him and a host of other big clubs were after him. So that took no genius from Wenger's part, but i ,was absoulately delighted that we acquired his services. It looks like i was one of the few people who knew exactly what we got, next season he'll be top goalscorer (watch this space). But in regards to this new signning Vermaelen well... I know nothing about him but he looks psyhically strong and he is tall. We do need another centre half however and as many people said before Ajax do produce a lot of talented young players, we can only wait and see what this guy brings to the mighty gunners. I only hope Wenger will buy a holding midfield player and I reckon we are back on track.
Welcome Vermaelen to THE EMIRATES. Yes, his coming will definitely make the Arsenal back line very competitive. The likes of Galas, Toure, Djouru and Sylvester will work very hard now to make the first team and I bet this is one of the few steps Arsenal need to compete again. VIVA ARSENAL.
McCarthy (Warri, Nigeria)
the 11 millon Arsene Wenger just spent is probably all the got from the chaiman. He should have spent it on a defensive midfielder. Arsenal are prabably stuck with denilson or song on that position for another season.
