Lamb: Wheater holds key to revival

Sat 20 Jun, 02:51 PM

Chief executive Keith Lamb believes that Middlesbrough-born defender David Wheater is pivotal to the club's revival plans.

Despite Boro's relegation from the Premier League Wheater, who has two year remaining on his contract at the Riverside, has vowed to stay and help the club regain its top flight status.

And Lamb insists the 22-year-old centre-half has a big part to play in that, he told the Evening Gazette: "We are looking forward to David becoming the cornerstone of our defence in future years.

"We are absolutely delighted that David has come out publicly and said that he is staying at Middlesbrough. We have a fight on our hands and David is up for the fight."

Wheater is currently recovering from a knee operation but will be fit for the start of the Championship campaign on August 8.

  1. hey lol everyone has an opinion we all have players who we prefer and who we dont prefer nd unfortunately for me wheater is one of those players who for me isnt very good. we all have an opinion and you have yours so let it be that way and also i am not one of those people who slags of everything my club boro do. i was born here and will always support boro in whatever they do and wherever they are so if they decide to keep wheater this season i will support that descision and as much as i dont like him i will support him in all our games because that is what a rrue fan does isnt it?

  2. Agree 100% tangentga. Whereas Boro undoubtedly has frailties in defence, Wheater was not one of them. The problems were in midfield when O'Neil and/or Digard did not play and in attack when we just did not score enough goals. Our goals against tally was actually not bad. I'd like to think Boro could hang on to Huth, but if he goes they have the ever reliable Riggot and a good prospect or two from the academy to play alongside Wheater who grows in experience every game. Lamb of course is trying a bit of phsycology with his comments above in light of speculation of Premier clubs looking at Wheater.

  3. for someone who calls themselves "footyfan4eva" you dont seem to be a fan of anyone or anything! Do you ever say anything positive?
Yes, Wheater slipped up on occasions last season, but no more than the people around him! Vidic made plenty of mistakes at Man U but he wins player of the year awards etc.
Wheats should be applauded for wanting to stay at his home town club and helping us back up, not slagged off like this!
I've no doubt you'd be one of these who would slag the club off whatever they did
