Tough times ahead, warns Nixon

John Nixon has spoken about the financial problems that prompted him to step down as Carlisle's managing director.

The 60-year-old, who is one of the club's four owners, will now work on a part-time unpaid basis in an attempt to reduce costs.

"We've had to look at the business from a viewpoint of cost reduction," he told the News and Star. "I leave the post with a degree of trepidation because I have some great working relationships with people inside the club.

"However I'll still be doing the contracts in and contracts out with transfers, the Football League stuff, ground maintenance and other things on a long list.

"Bringing forward a substantial loss this year means that we are going to be sailing through some choppy waters for the next 12 months I suspect.

"It will be more calm if the team performs well but if the results on the pitch are the same as they were last season then it's going to be a difficult 12 months for sure."

  1. Nixon is just making the excuses now as to why we are doing nothing in the transfer market. We are not going going to go down with a fighting spirit but a fatal and very loud whimper.I fear for the future of the once pride of cumbria

  2. nice report to suck the life out of the club. Coming to the new season whatever the situation we need to attract players and inspire fans to support - this report will do neither. Lets not be defeated before we turn up.

Nobody expects big things but what the fans want is local pride, a strong work ethic & grit, playing to win and where we can attractive football (Like Paul Simpson gave us).

Last season saw too many players in the Phisio's office rather than on the field and a playing philosophy of trying to hang on to a one goal lead rather than playing the game out with a positive mindset.

This season we need to turn Brunton Park back into a difficult away trip that it was in the past. Most of the clubs this season in league 1 are from the south, judging by the past they wont like the journey and they wont bring much support. Show some inspiration for the fans (whatever the financial situation) and we will make Brunton Park a bastion again. I dont care if we have the cheapest squad in the division with a team filled with lads from coal mining villages in the northeast (like Alan Shoulder & team in 1980s) so long as we believe, battle, work hard, try to play good football and try to win. Even if we are relegated I dont care so long as you can look back at the rollercoaster ride of the season and say it was worthwhile.
