Bowen Bags Summer Hat-Trick

Sun 20 Jul, 08:09 AM

Peter Bowen completed a hat-trick of victories in the toteswinger Summer Plate Handicap Chase when Snoopy Loopy took the Market Rasen feature.

Iron Man and Yes Sir have captured the race for the last two years and the Pembrokeshire trainer sent out a quartet of runners in order to complete the hat-trick.

His two previous winners were again in the 16-strong field but neither figured as Seamus Durack and Snoopy Loopy jumped the final fence upsides Brooklyn Brownie in front of the packed enclosures.

The pair finished first and second in the Perth Gold Cup in June and again battled out the finish, but it was Bowen's 16-1 shot who prevailed this time by a length and a half.

Evan Williams' William Butler ran a blinder in his bid to take his fifth race in 13 days and he was just a length and a quarter down in third.

Bowen, whose other previous winner of the race in its current guise was Ballycassidy in 2003, said: "He didn't get the trip last time at Uttoxeter, but the ground was perfect for him here and the strong pace up front suited him.

"We bought him for £120,000 two years ago so he has now justified his price tag. He is a good horse when everything goes right for him.

"We will probably keep him going and there is a race at Newton Abbot in a few weeks, or he could come back here in September."

Worries about the overnight rain having an unfavourable affect on the ground for Katies Tuitor proved unfounded as the 7-1 shot stayed on well to land the totescoop6 Summer Handicap Hurdle.

Noel Fehily's mount has thrived since being moved to Charlie Mann's yard during the winter and coped with the officially soft conditions to register a second success for the Lambourn trainer.

The 7-1 chance was given an ultra-patient ride but crept into contention and led approaching the second-last before quickening away to deny 11-4 favourite Advancement by four lengths.

Fehily said: "He did it nicely but I was very concerned about the ground. The showers kept coming though, and he splashed through it."

Williams, who made the 221-mile trip from the Vale Of Glamorgan, enjoyed better luck when saddling the former John Oxx inmate Akarshan to victory in the totesport 0800 221 221 Juvenile Novices' Hurdle.

Never Catcher turned for home in the lead but Paul Moloney was breathing down his neck aboard the 11-4 favourite and he only had to push the jumping newcomer out to score by 17 lengths.

Williams said: "He was one of five horses I bought from the Aga Khan at Doncaster Sales in January and he is a nice, young horse.

"I might try to win a maiden on the Flat with him now to give him more education, but it would be no surprise if he had a break until the autumn."

Keith Mercer's only ride of the day was a winning one as he executed a fine front-running performance on Steve Gollings' Ursis (9-1) in the DFDS Lys-Line Handicap Hurdle.

His mount was tackling the two-mile-six-furlong trip for the first time but stamina was not a problem and he skipped over the final two flights to register a three-length success.

Gollings said: "The trip was a question mark and we wanted a soft lead. I knew if he got that he would go well and he has done all Keith asked of him."
