Former IAAF World Cup 5000 metres champion Mike Kigen was a convincing winner of the Bupa Great Capital Run in London's Hyde Park on Sunday morning.
Kigen controlled the 10 kilometres road race from just after the halfway point and struck 40 seconds off the course record with his winning time of 29 minutes 42 seconds.
He surged ahead in the last four kilometres to keep the title in Kenyan hands, finishing well clear of former European 10,000m bronze medallist Jose Rios and Richard Limo.
The Spanish runner-up clocked a time of 29min 04sec with Limo, second in last year's Amsterdam marathon, finishing in 29:06.
"That was tough, particularly after a fast pace in the early stages, but I felt confident enough to break away at six kilometres," said Kigen.
Michelle Ross-Cope made up for her disappointing performance 12 months ago by finishing the top woman in the mixed race contested mainly by domestic runners.
The Stoke veteran recorded a time of 33:28 for an easy win over fellow British international Natalie Harvey and Nicky Archer who crossed the line in 34mins dead and 34:51 respectively.
"I was running on my own after the first two and a half kilometres and the stiff wind didn't make it any easier," said Ross-Cope who missed Hayley Yelling's course record by five seconds.
She added: "I was very determined to make up for the run I had last year and so I'm going away happy."
