Premier League - Ferguson warns Tottenham

Eurosport - Sun, 20 Jul 10:54:00 2008

Sir Alex Ferguson says it will be "embarrassing" for Spurs if they carry out their threat to report Manchester United to the Premier League.

FOOTBALL Alex Ferguson - 0

Chairman Daniel Levy is furious at United for what he sees as the very public courting of striker Dimitar Berbatov.

However Old Trafford boss Ferguson maintains he never mentioned anyone by name when he revealed they had tabled a bid for a player.

Ferguson claims his remarks were misreported by a national newspaper and that United may now bring in their legal team.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs in the Vodacom Challenge in South Africa, he said: "It is going to be very embarrassing for them (Tottenham).

"But you know what Daniel Levy is like. He is different."

United had to settle for a point in the opening game of the tournament with Chris Eagles getting the equaliser.

Eagles, who made only three appearances last season, saw his header take a deflection in the 59th minute following a cross from Carlos Tevez.

That goal cancelled out Jonathan Quartey's opener from the penalty spot that sparked scenes of chaotic celebration at the Newlands Stadium.

It was a feisty match and Wayne Rooney was booked for a challenge on Tinashe Nengomashe.

However Ferguson believes the England striker was unfairly punished.

"Wayne is a born fighter," said the Old Trafford boss. "He gets frustrated in some games.

"He is learning how to control himself and it (the challenge) was next to nothing.

"I do not think he was out of order in this instance."

England defender Rio Ferdinand was ruled out of the match when he suffered a back spasm just before kick-off.

However he could return for the next match against Orlando Pirates on Tuesday in Durban.

Michael Carrick, who is also carrying a knock, could also be available, while Wes Brown is expected to recover from a gashed ankle he sustained today.

Ferguson added: "It was a good competitive game and the Kaizer Chiefs played well.

"We found ourselves 1-0 down and that makes it hard because you are still looking for fitness and rhythm to your game.

"I think we deserved a draw. It was a good workout and a competitive game with lots of tasty tackles.

"That brings an edge to your game and I was very pleased to get that kind of competition today."

  7. fergie is a very big hypocrite. What does he mean that he didn't mention any name. All he does is to unsettle players. I will like to ask My Fergie if all other clubs in the premiership are there to make up d numbers? He refused vehemently to sell Heize to liverpool on the ground that they're is rivals, instead sold to Real Maldrid. Bought Tevez from W/ham who was there star player, so Why is he crying like a day old baby over Ronaldo Supposedly star player? Totteham should not sell Berbie to Manu They're rivals as well and they're good enough to win premiership& UEFA championship. It's not only good for manu.

  8. about time someone pulled him up. he has been blatantly talking about berbatov when spurs rejected their offer, he thinks man u can do as they please because they win a few trophies. lets see what the premeir league say and i hope the acrimoney between the two clubs now will stop berbatov moving to the mancs. i hear barca are interested so we can ship him off abroad.

  13. If it's true that Levy told Fergie that Berba was not for sale, he should respect that fact and move on. Even the great man (haha) has'nt got the right to unsettle players. He has to have permission to speak to players who are under contract.

  15. In reply to shujaahmad2004: you say wenger gets away with "worse", so you obviously are not aware arsenal have a policy of never talking about a player until he has sighned for the club and if you are talking of the young players we are supposed to of poached from their respective clubs (i.e fabregas from barcelona) surely it is up to the likes of barcelona to offer the player a contract to show they value a player rather than wait till they shine for arsenal then say they "poached" him. It cant be wrong to approach a GREAT young player without a pro contract just good management!
Keep up the good work wenger

  16. H is the same old deluded liverpool fan who should be more concerned about his clubs new stadium & barry being dumb enough to pick them instead of arsenal & to all the other dumb people that responded calling fergie dumb or stupid or whatever, he should know if he talked to the press or not & if daniel levy is dumb enough to report man u over a sun article then i'll be waiting to see the egg on his face, Just ask crystal palace fans about tottenham abusing school boy contracts to snatch there best youth stars, what goes around comes around levy, shut up

  19. Talk about ManU having ugly players, Ferdinand reminds me of PLUG out of the Beano, only PLUG was better looking.

From senseiolly, on Sun 20 Jul 9:42AM
  20. I really don't think Berba will put on the Mau Utd jersey this coming season. He is considered a good looking chap. He wouldn't want to be team-mates with Scholes, Tevez, Park and Rooney. It will make him looks bad. Man U should be lookin at someone like Adebayor, Kanu, Ribery or even Crouch to complete their collection of UGLY players.
