British teenager Shanaze Reade recovered from an early fall to post the second fastest time of the seeding rounds as BMX cycling made its Olympic debut.
The world champion came off her bike in the first run and could post a time of only 59.33 seconds, which saw her slowest in the field heading into run two.
But, with just the quickest of the riders' two times counting, the 19-year-old recovered in time to record a 36.88 second run which put her as second seed.
Reade will now avoid Anne-Caroline Chausson in the semi-finals after the French woman, who Reade beat in the World Championships earlier this year, posted the fastest time of the day.
The Crewe rider will also avoid Sarah Walker, the 2008 World Championship bronze medallist, who goes in the first semi-final along with Chausson.
"Mentally I was prepared, but then I did it and I washed out," Reade said. "I don't know why I fell. We looked at the video, it's just one of those things, that's BMX. It didn't affect me. I'm hurt a little bit now but I'm also excited."
Men's hope Liam Phillips failed to progress after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the third run of his quarter-final.
Phillips had placed fifth and sixth in the first two runs and needed to post a good result in the third in order to book a place in the semi.
But he was caught up in mass crash halfway down the course on the third run, sustaining the dislocated shoulder, before getting back on his bike to finish the run in seventh.
"I'm absolutely gutted," Phillips said. "I felt it had gone as I changed my position. I was in a good points position up to then.
"If I had just stayed on the bike I would have been ok. I came here to get as much experience as possible for 2012 and I feel as though I have achieved that."

Well done Shanaze..dont take ant notice of the idiots remarks...you are representing youre country. We are supporting you. Best of luck from a "creweite"
You know..you folks are right...I'm a changed man...Lets keep BMX in the olympics!!! Hooooray!!!!
And lets also have tiddly winks, wood chopping, asymmetrical brick stacking, worm wrestling, oyster training, crampon counting, weasel bashing (starting at 500 meters of course),harmonic throat gargling (proof of dissonance required), toejam target practice and last but not least semi belligerent bum washing.
BMX requires strength, skill, adjility and guts. Why shouldn't it be an Olympic sport? It's very competetive and exciting to watch.
I guess in a few years time we will be having a beer drinking medal at this rate
I think we should have Olympic Model Making!!!
BMX...what a fantastic sport! Fast, fun, adrenalin, skilled and only for the brave.....which obviously tzontag is not. Accessible to nearly eveyone, and a sport which all ages can compete in. BMX Rules!
My Kids have beeen waiting to see this fantastic girl doing a sport which they have been able to mimic!! seeing as they are 7 and 4. Keep on bringing new challenges to the Olympics the Future may not be so short sighted as tzontag
What prat allowed BMX into the Olympics, shame on them. Bring back tug-o-war.
screw you tzontag
(tzontag was the 1926 silver medallist in tug-of-war and lost to the U.S.S.R. team in rope climbing).
Screw BMX....what a joke. The olympic committee just wants to make money.
