Int Football - Terry named England captain - again

Eurosport - Wed, 20 Aug 09:01:00 2008

John Terry has retained the England captaincy on a permanent basis after Fabio Capello chose the Chelsea defender to lead the national side ahead of Rio Ferdinand.

Terry, 27, was given the job he held under former coach Steve McClaren and will lead the team out against Czech Republic in Wednesday's friendly at Wembley when he wins his 45th cap.

Manchester United stopper Ferdinand was named vice-captain.

"It means the world to me to retain the armband," said Terry who was told the news by Capello after England's training session on Tuesday morning.

"To get the armband back is a huge achievement for me.

"It was about an hour ago, just after training. The manager called the whole squad together and told us as a whole.

"For me to get it above the likes of him (Ferdinand) and the other players in the squad is a great honour."

Capello said: "John's big personality is why I chose him but Rio is also important for the team which is why I made him vice-captain."

"Rio, when he was captain, played very well - the same level as John," he added. "It was not easy for me to choose because they are very good players."

The decision came as a surprise after Ferdinand, who along with Terry, David Beckham and Steven Gerrard has already skippered England under Capello, was installed as favourite to be given the honour.

But Terry - also his club's captain - was given the armband and will now be charged with leading England to qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

England kick-off their qualification campaign against Andorra on 6 September.

Terry made his England debut as a substitute in a friendly against Serbia & Montenegro in June 2003, establishing himself in the side the following season.

He has scored four goals for his country, including England's first at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium against Brazil in June last year.

  3. I think capello's decision to make john terry captain is a major step to getting england back to where they should be, one of the best teams in world football, he has a huge passion for the game and my belief is he is the best centre back in england, and will bring the best out of the other players.

  8. It was only an incredible unrepeatable fluke that made Liverpool come back from 0-3 against Milan, certainly not Carragher, Liverpool scored 3 goals in 6 minutes and then defended until the end of 120 minutes. Flukes like that only happen once every 100 years of football.

  9. i think Woody is a liverpool supporter... atleast thats the only way his mad ramblings could make any sense.

Terry was the right man for the job, but no one ever agrees on squad choice.

In my opinion, Beckham shouldn't be anywhere near the england team any more playing for a bad team in a 3rd rate league... I'd sooner watch conference football than an american team.

  11. Rio shouldn't even be playing. The selectors should have played Carragher, he wouldn't have retired from International football and he is the BEST CENTRE BACK EVER, or at least right now he is. Gerrard should be captain, with Carra, Terry or even Becks as vice captain. After all, if you can lead a team to a 3-0 to 3-3 comeback, doesn't that prove you have leadership skills? Anyway, Gerrard plays better when he has the responsibility of being captain. He is the complete player, and wouldn't you want to add to that? And Mr. Capello, we want fast, free - flowing football, not 4-5-1s. 4-4-2m, or even 4-3-3.

  13. It is strange how so much fuss is made on the ENGLAND captain; in Italy, for example, the captain is simply the most capped 'permanent' first-team player. That's it, irrespective of whether he is captain of his club, a leader, inspirational, and all that @#$%. Bottom line - it's not so bloody important as whoever puts on the band becomes a leader. Having said that I expected Capello to instill the same procedure in England - captaincy strictly in order of the no. of caps: 1. Ferdinand, 2. Gerrard, 3. Lampard, 4. Terry. If one also counts players who dont't always start, before Terry there are both the Coles, and of course Beckham.

By going on the number of caps this would have removed all the huu-haa from this pointles matter.

What really counts is whether the 11 players on the field are up to the task!

  14. Who cares if John Terry is captain. The issue is can he and the manager deliver. This time if England do not qualify will the captain be sacked with the manager.

  15. love gerrard forever..........muah!!!!!!!!!!
prove that you deserve to be your country's captian on coming games...
    dont dissappoint me baby..........

  16. Well, well, what can be deduced from this decision? For sure, Man U, Liverpool and Chelsea fans will argue their individual points of view; fair enough; as a selfish Man U fan i am in a way not too concerned that Rio did not get the call, simply because i want him to concentrate on more trophies this season for Utd and not to get caught up in all the politics and PR work that has become the focal point of being an England captain. What concerns me more is the signal that is being sent out; that being the time taken by Capello to choose a captain! This would never have happened in the days of Bobby Moore, Brian Robson and David Beckham. If Capello is having such difficulties in choosing a captain, how on earth is he going to be able to make the really big calls when it comes to the starting 11 or more to the point, who he will leave out from the starting 11.

  17. Guys, your worst than the england team, you think only of your club. whats the bet that the people who have sided with terry were chelsea fans, the ones who sided with rio ferdinand were man u fans, etc...

this is about our country and frankly, so long as we dont have a bad captain we're fine. Ther're both good captains. capello took terry 'cause he had more experience as a captain and is captain of his club.

From risker, on Wed 20 Aug 7:05AM
  18. There is only one person who can lift a team when they are loosing and it is NOT John Terry. Mr Cappello I think you have made your first mistake since taking over as England manager. Steven Gerrard should have been made captain as he can lift a team and is inspirational by leading his club by example. In all my years of leadership training this is how we are taught how to manage people. Beckham did it but was unlucky not to get the results so why choose his successor who led the team to the disasterous European qualifiers?

From SUSAN M, on Wed 20 Aug 6:56AM
  19. I can't believe the time you all have to discuss who should have been the captain. Capello had "MANY" choices (Terry, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Barry, Rooney, and even Lampard. Anyone of these would have been a good choice. What England is lacking is not a Captain but a "Killer Instinct". Come on England, don't settle for a 1-0, or 2-0 against Slovenia, I want to see a 5-0 score.

    From starman_123, on Wed 20 Aug 6:41AM
  20. This is not about about Man-Ure, Liverpuke or Chelski. Gerrard is a good player but not necessarily a good leader. Ferdinand is a good player and leader, but he is not even the club captain of Man-Ure. Terry is great player and a great leader, Capello made the right decision. End Of Discussion, Move-On
