American Tyler Farrar sprinted to victory on the opening stage of the Eneco Tour in Belgium to take overall leadership of the race.
The Garmin rider outmuscled Belgian Tom Boonen and Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen at the line to win the 184km stage from Aalter and Aardoie.
Farrar was delighted to wrest the yellow jersey from Frenchman Sylvian Chavanel, winner of Tuesday's prologue in Rotterdam.
"I'm in the best form of my life. The team was totally behind me. I couldn't disappoint," said Farrar.
"I was already very good in the Tour de France. And now after a little rest I feel even better. I'm very fast," he added.
The sprint finish in Ardooie was tarnished by a spectacular crash which left traces of blood on the road and saw Belgian rider Gorik Gardeyn (Silence) and Frenchman Yoann Offredo (Francaise des Jeux) taken to hospital for tests on back injuries.
PROLOGUE
Quick Step rider Sylvain Chavanel registered victory on the prologue time trial on the Eneco Tour around the streets of Rotterdam.
The Frenchman edged American Tyler Farrar (Garmin), winner of the Vattenfall Cyclassics one-day classic in Hamburg at the weekend, and Belgian rider Tom Boonen (Quick-Step) on the 4.4km route.
"It was a quick course, not very difficult and not too technical. I felt good and I was able to show my power," said Chavanel, who went off in the middle of the pack and could only watch as Farrar and Boonen went close to bettering his time.
He added: "I was aware I had put in a good time but waiting for the final results was terribly stressful."
British rider Bradley Wiggins (Garmin) came in fourth, a mere two seconds behind Chavanel.
The first stage of the race takes place between Aalter and Ardooie in Belgium, a 184 km route favourable to sprinters.

Boonen or bummin, off the coke, no results.
As long as Cav still has the train- which he will because he will continue to deliver the goods- he will be very difficult to beat. Brilliant to see Farrar doing so well though!
The Columbia train won at least 4 of the stages for Cav, especially the last one. Farrar is proving he's one of the top guys. It will be interesting to see if Cav still has the train next year and how much stronger guys like TF will become. Sprinting needed a new generation. The guys at the top had been getting a bit older.
Boonen is set to become the 'new' Peter van Petergem - as long as he wins either Roubaix or Flanders, his season is a success. His days as a top-level sprinter are long gone...........along with his reputation.
Difficult to tell weather he's getting faster, or weather the opposition is not top level. There's some decent guys there (Brown, Boasson-Haggen, Forster etc), but none of the top boys - Cavendish, Hushovd, Freire, Bennatti, Ciolek etc. Boonen is dross at the moment and his season starts and finishes in April.
Just in case people haven't read the full report, Boonen punctured with about 7k to go and had to chase back on (with the help of cars and some team-mates), which could have taken a bit of sting out of his legs. Farrar is fast though - that's for sure.
The only reason Farrar is winning is there is no other competition.
itstoleyour is cavs boyfriend. another fast yank, the last thing you europeans want.
Mark S is Farrar's girlfriend
good rider...i expect him to fight for the points jersey in the next big tours
Watch it Cav. Farrar is getting faster and faster.
Agree. That crash at the end was a disgrace - the rider responsible should be disciplined. The commentators on cycling.tv suggested that it wasn't the first time he's done something like that.
Not seen any of his 'tweets', but given his past form, doesn't surprise me. Don't get me wrong, 4th is not a bad result, but expectations are now sky high and he does need to get some wins on his road palmares.
I agree partly Pedro - but after reading Wiggin's tweats, it seems like he's done nothing but eat, drink and be merry since the tour :) So I think this performance was pretty good! Garmin are definitely in a good position going into the next few days - I assume there are time bonuses on sprint finishes?
Wiggins close again, but no cigar. So frustrating! Consistent placings in TTs this year and rode great overall in the TdF, but still seems to suffer from Garminitis...........good, but not quite good enough to win (Tyler Farrar's recent success at the Vattenfalls against second-tier opposition aside). Let's see what he can do overall, surely he has to be one of the favourites, now. And with that comes a whole new pressure...
