Premier League - Team of the week: Flying Brian

Eurosport - Thu, 20 Aug 16:19:00 2009

This week's team has a distinctly claret tinge to it, with Brian 'Beast' Jensen one of six Burnley players to feature.

FOOTBALL 2009-10 Premier League Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen - 0

HOW IT WORKS

We take marks out of 10 awarded to Premier League players from a selection of six national newspapers - The Sun, Daily Star, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, The Times and the Guardian - then create an average and round to the nearest half. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the team of the week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Burnley's heroics against Manchester United earn them a whopping six spots in this week's side, with goalkeeper Brian Jensen leading the way as our player of the week. The Clarets' indefatigable skipper Graham Alexander helps keep Steven Gerrard out of the XI, along with Chelsea's Deco - yes, Deco - with Robbie Blake worth his place for that thunderous volleyed winner alone. Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe's hat-trick at Hull sees him accrue the same average as Jensen, but the Dane keeper gets the nod due to the fact his points were earned against the champions and not relegation fodder. Andy Keogh's place alongside Defoe might raise a few eyebrows, while Glen Johnson's goal in Liverpool's win over Stoke bags him a place a right-back.

Team of the week (4-4-2):

GK: Brian Jensen (Burnley) - 8.5

LB: Ashley Cole (Chelsea) - 7

CB: Clarke Carlisle (Burnley) - 7.5

CB: Andre Bikey (Burnley) - 7.5

RB: Glen Johnson (Liverpool) - 7.5

LM: Wade Elliott (Burnley) - 7.5

CM: Deco (Chelsea) - 8

CM: Graham Alexander (Burnley) - 8

RM: Robbie Blake (Burnley) - 8

FW: Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur) - 8.5

FW: Andy Keogh (Wolverhampton Wanderers) - 8

FLOPS OF THE WEEK

Of Hull City's quintet to make the Flops XI, highly-rated defender Michael Turner comes off worst. Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes scored lower than Tigers counterpart Boaz Myhill, but it's a tad harsh to include the Brazilian as he withdrew through injury after a quarter of an hour. Portsmouth's Niko Krancjar and Anthony Vanden Borre take the places on the flanks. The trio of Manchester United players in the side includes Michael Owen, who takes up his familiar place in the Flops attack alongside Daniel Cousin .

Flops of the week (4-4-2):

GK: Boaz Myhill (Hull City) - 5.5

LB: Gregory Vignal (Birmingham City) - 5.5

CB: Michael Turner (Hull City) - 4

CB: Antony Gardner (Hull City) - 5

RB: John O'Shea (Manchester United) - 5.5

LM: Niko Kranjcar (Portsmouth) - 6

CM: George Boateng (Hull City) - 4.5

CM: Anderson (Manchester United) - 4.5

RM: Anthony Vanden Borre (Portsmouth) - 4.5

FW: Michael Owen (Manchester United) - 4.5

FW: Daniel Cousin (Hull City) - 4.5

  2. well lads, it cant be right puttin 6 players from Burnley in the team of the week. Thats crazy!. Eventhough, Burnley managed to bit the champions in thier opening game after so many years (53 or smt), they dont deserve to have six player in that ranking.

  9. Every dog has its day as the saying goes and just to explain Uniteds defeat by saying they were rubbish is to disrespect Burnleys performance. Of course M.U. are better than the Clarets they just were not on Wednesday night a fact accepted in part by A.F.

  17. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

Burnley players got high marks simply because they were playing Man U. Huddlestone and Modric were miles better than Alexander or Elliot. Don't want to take anything away from Burnley's win but Man U were rubbish last night.
