Championship - Round-up: Baggies thrash Boro

Eurosport - Sun, 20 Sep 12:26:00 2009

West Bromwich Albion were in imperious form as they brushed aside Middlesbrough 5-0 in their top of the table clash at the Riverside.

Chris Brunt, Middlesbrough v WBA, FOOTBALL - 0

A double from Chris Brunt - one from fully 40 yards - coupled with strikes from Youssuf Mulumbu, Roman Bednar and Jerome Thomas cemented West Brom's place at the top of the table.

Boro's North-East neighbours Newcastle kept pace with the Baggies following an edgy 3-1 victory against bottom side Plymouth Argyle. Kevin Nolan bundling home after Karl Duguid had cancelled out Steven Taylor's early header, with Andy Carroll confirming victory in the 84th minute.

Cardiff fell further behind in battle for the automatic promotion spots following a 2-0 defeat at home to QPR. On loan Arsenal youngster Jay Simpson with a first-half brace.

Victory for Leicester against Watford at Vicarage Road would have moved the Foxes into a play-off spot but they drew 3-3.

Matty Fryatt had given the Foxes a 2-0 half-time lead, the first a 20th-minute penalty, but the hosts came back after the break through Danny Graham and Heidar Helguson.

Helguson thought he had won the game for his side in the 77th minute but N'Guessan popped up to snatch a point for Leicester.

Ipswich are still without a win having drawn 3-3 with Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Lee Martin fired home 11 minutes from time to give the visitors the lead for the first time in the match but Quinton Fortune ensured Rovers took a share of the spoils

Rookie Doncaster striker Waide Fairhurst opened the scoring with a superb overhead kick in the 13th minute. Jack Colback and Tamas Priskin got Ipswich's other goals either side of Martin Woods' strike for Doncaster.

Preston came from behind to win 3-2 against Coventry City at Deepdale. Sammy Clingan with a superb opener for the visitors before a brace from Chris Brown and a Neil Mellor header made the game safe for the home side. Clinton Morrison's consolation came too late for the Sky Blues.

Another superb comeback at London Road gave Peterborough all three points in a 3-2 victory over Reading.

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Simon Church had put the Royals 2-0 up at half-time but Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron McLean drew Posh level before a late George Boyd strike sealed all three points.

Nottingham Forest were downed 1-0 by a first-half Charlie Adam wonder strike for Blackpool.

Crystal Palace were also 1-0 victors against Derby County thanks to a Darren Ambrose strike.

Scunthorpe left it late to salvage a draw against Bristol City - Grant McCann's deflected 90th minute effort cancelling out Alvaro Saborio's earlier strike.

The only scoreless game of the day came at Oakwell, where Swansea held Barnsley.

  1. Great performance. The last time I saw Baggies win five nil away, was the final game of 76-77 at Leicester City.
That one was Johnny Giles last game, he needed one goal to make 100, didn't score, think he hit the bar.

Its been a long time coming, heres to the next five nil away win ! Keep it going lads.
