Yvan Muller, the closest rival to Farfus and Tarquini in the title race, set the 11th fastest lap, nine tenths of a second behind.

James Thompson's LADA Priora clocked a lap of 1:57.142s that was good enough for tenth position, 0.8s off the pace.

The Chevrolet team was forced to change the engine on Alain Menu's Cruze LT car after it failed during qualifying on Saturday.

After securing the 10th fastest lap, the Swiss driver came back into the pits at the end of Q1 in a cloud of smoke.

The failure prevented him from taking part in Q2 and cost him a 10-position grid penalty for race one.
