Floyd Mayweather Jr celebrated his return to the ring after a 21-month retirement with a unanimous points victory over Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in a non-title welterweight bout.
Widely regarded as the best defensive fighter of his generation, the American dominated all 12 rounds against his smaller opponent with his left jab and agile movement to improve his career record to 40-0 with 25 knockouts.
Mayweather, who held a significant weight and reach advantage over five-times world champion Marquez, was a heavy favourite going into the bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and knocked down Marquez in the second round.
The 32-year-old showed no sign of rust after his lengthy stint away and controlled the pace of the fight with his lightning hand and foot speed, rock-solid defence and a series of telling combinations.
"I've been off for almost two years but it felt really good to be back," Mayweather said ringside. "I was happy with the victory but I know can get better."
The flamboyant American was back in the ring for the first time since his 10th round stoppage of Britain's Ricky Hatton at the same venue in December 2007.
"That guy is tough as nails," added Mayweather, who gained one-sided verdicts from all three judges -- by 118-109, 120-107 and 119-108.
"He was a great little big man. I threw a hell of a shot that dropped him, and then he got back up and kept fighting. He's a tough guy."
The 36-year-old Marquez, who moved up two weight classes to challenge the American, slipped to 50-5-1 with 37 knockouts.
"It was a very hard fight," said the Mexican who had never fought above 135 pounds. "He surprised me with the knockdown. He hurt me in that round but not at any other time.
"I don't want to make excuses but the weight was the problem," added Marquez, who was four pounds lighter at Friday's weigh-in.
"He's too fast. When I hit him he laughed but I knew he felt my punches. I did the best I could do."
Watched by a crowd of 13,000 that included basketball great Magic Johnson and boxers Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins, Mayweather belied his lengthy absence from the ring by making a strong start.
He landed a couple of left jabs early on, drawing blood on his opponent's forehead before Marquez ended a fast-paced opening round by pinning the American against the ropes.
Although Marquez forced Mayweather to back-peddle in the early exchanges in round two, the confident American put the Mexican on the canvas with a stinging left hook.
Mayweather, moving nimbly and frequently leaning back to avoid head punches by Marquez, took advantage of his longer reach to dominate the next three rounds.
While the aggressive Marquez frequently drove Mayweather on to the ropes, the ever-smiling American repeatedly landed telling left jabs to remain in overall control.
Mayweather ended the 11th round by landing a crunching right hook and maintained control until the final bell sounded to end the 12th.
The American dominated the official statistics, connecting with 290 of 493 punches thrown to 69 of 583 for Marquez. He also landed 105 power punches compared to the Mexican's 48.

june you @#$% stop going on about the 140lbs to 142lbs please FMJ would not go down to that as over the years he has grown into a weight class between welterweight and light middleweight so the pacman would have to go up to welter. mayweather will beat manny i think it will be a great fight and manny is a great champion in and out of the ring bye this i mean helping his country through the tough times there in. june dont write @#$% back as you dont know wat your talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mayweathers dominance over Marquez is not so appreciated by boxing fans around the world. He didnt respect his opponent and the country his opponent came from, didnt meet catchweight and paid Marquez to be a sacrificial lamb. For me, he does not deserves to move his ranking. From middleweight fight with Dela Hoya, goes down to Welterweight and then fight a guy from lightweight. A real fighter who deserves to be on top of the P4P is the guy who consistly fight above his natural weight. Example: Pacquiao fight from flyweight, to bantam weight, featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight, welterweight then to light welter and then back to welterweight. This is a plus big points to a fighter like this. A fighter who is allready big and yet choose a fight that can easily beat from 2 lower weights is not a fighter. He is a good defender but not a fighter. This is a big minus points to this kind of fighter. He does not deserve to improve his ranks. If he fights anybody in welterweight like Mosley, Ward, Williams and win, then he deserves to improve his rankings.
Have FMJ fight the Pacman at 140 and I am pretty sure he'll back out. On big reason will be the weight coz Pacman will outclass him in this category. This case, I guarantee that weight becomes a big issue. Pacman will not go with FMJ terms that is why this fight will not materialize.
If you look at FMJ's last 2 fights, the deals to fight him were done around HIM. What he said, goes. Had Hatton fought at his Light-Welterweight then maybe he would have come close to beating FMJ. Had Marquez fought him at either Light or Light-Welterweight, I again question how close the outcome would have been. But these fighters wanted the prestige of taking on Pretty Money Boy, so they backed down to his terms. But, in all honesty, FMJ has fought his 'weigh' up to his current welterweight limit. And whichever weight he's fought at, he's fought and beat the best. I don't think weight can be too much of an issue if all camps agree to the conditions. Personally, there is only one boxer who can cause FMJ problems...and that's Pacquiao.
Let's not forget Mayweather beat Marquez with speed, not power, he danced all over the place and countered the counter. If he was lighter (assuming of course he wasn't weight drained and therefore a little tired) then what difference would it have made, surely he would have been even faster?
Hi Chris,
I think you nailed the point there. Money talks in boxing and obviously, boxers and their handlers are motivated by it. Now that the catch weight fight becoming a trend in boxing, I am very concern as to how the boxing organizations will handle the situation. In my opinion, they should look at this very closely to protect the boxers and fans from exploitation. It's unfortunate that the "mafia rules" continue to prevail in boxing at the expense of the greatest boxers in this generation.
When is Mayweather gonna fight the best fighters at welterweight like Mosley,Cotto,Margarito.Thinking maybe Clottey would have been a better comeback fight than Marquez.Marquez moved up too soon maybe he should have started against someone like Malignaggi or Collazo.Taking nothing away from both fighters they are both awesome but since when is a counter puncher vs a counter puncher a good fight.Hopefully Mayweather will take on Mosley & then Pacquiao for a decider
Hi June,
I agree with a lot of what you are saying, but i cant get over the fact that both camps agreed to this fight and a certain amount of anticipation about FMJ weight had been taken into account with the penalty fees written into the contract for a boxer not keeping to the contract which could only be for the benefit of FMJ. Im definatly no expert but Marquez and his camp knew what they were getting into, so must of thought they would try their luck anyway. Catch-weights are always unpredictable- Roy Jones beat Ruiz in heavyweights stepping up 2 divisons, Pavlik lost to Hopkins stepping up 2 divisons- just never know what your gonna get. Yet some people said that FMJ was gonna get KO'd but Marquez who never came close to doing that despite the predicted upset from some (Hoya). I just think money was the motivation for both fighters- with FMJ in a win win situation- money and a nice set-up to face Pacman to take his P4P crown back.
Pacman is quicker and stronger than FMJ at 140 lbs to 142 lbs. FMJ height advantage is immaterial but I don't see this fight will happen at 140-142 lbs catch weight.
FYI a 5% weight loss or gain is considered a significant change and has a big impact on strength, speed and stamina of each boxers. FMJ is a natural 147 lbs fighter and he has lost only 1% compared to his natural weight. FMJ weight loss (less than 1%) is "not significant" compared to Marquez who gained 7% weight from his natural weight (135 to 144lbs) that is why he had problem during the fight. Sorry but I don't agree with fighters (like the FMJ) who goes out of the agreement to getn the credit. Marquez is simply a sacrificial lamb here. I am a big fan of FMJ but I don't like what he did with Marquez who intentionally is not willing to go more than 5% of his natural weight. This is basically the reason why Mayweather won't fight Pacman at 142 coz he can't handle Pacman at this catch weight. If FMJ will agree to fight the Pacman at less than 142 lbs he'll be in big trouble. I have a notion that this fight will not materialized because FMJ will not settle at this 140-142 catch wieght. The boxing organization should look closely for this matter if the catch wieght bouts will the future trend of boxing coz boxers are vulnerable for cheating as in the case of FMJ.
A lot of talk about weight being an issue- even Marquez mentioned it too??? Everyone knew that FMJ would come in much heavier than Marquez including the fighters themselves. They knew this would be the main issue when they first made the fight and contracts were drawn up, when they weighed in and before the first bell rang!! This will also be the issue if FMJ fights Pacman. If people or fighters are gonna use this as an excuse what would be the point in these guys fighting in the first place- just don't get it. If FMJ fights and beats Pacman people are gonna say he only won because he was heavier and naturally bigger. If Pacman wins- he'll be hailed as the greatest!? Why wouldn't FMJ get the same credit?? He too came from the lower weights and stepped up into heavier divisons with the same problems as other boxers
@ 48 - totally agree with you, but where Mayweather was only 4lbs over at the weigh-in, not really a problem you would think, he was actually 20lbs heavier on the night.
I know Warren is mollycoddling Khan but there will be a time when Amir will say..'Let me at the best'. And he'll get his wish. People don't spar with Pacquiao if they're just there for being hit. I'd love to see how those sparring sessions went. Speaking of sparring....Haye and Fury sparring with each other too. Again, I'd love to be a fly on the wall for that one. Although Haye would KO Fury, could the Hayemaker take a hard, clean punch to the chin? I'd like to see David Price v Tyson Fury if the McDermott fight isn't forced for a re-match.
khan is garbage and has done nothing in boxing to ever get a chance to fight floyd he would get destroyed very quickley he cannot take a punch.that fight would never happen as khan only fights idiots or guys ready to hang up there gloves guys with no speed and no punch if he ever fights someone with speed and a punch then its goodbye khan but that will never happen
dont waste your time and money on floyd. PPV is not worthy. Youtube is best fof the world's boring king!
This is rediculouS, "4 POUNDS" technically "2 POUNDS". If u can't beat a man four pounds heavier than you YOU just can't beat him! He is too fast and too smart PERIOD. It is time people recognize Mayweather Jr. for what he is, one of the BEST. Sure sometimes i don't care for some of his bravodo but in that ring he has been the best thing for boxing since Mike Tyson.
I would like to see him fight pac-man, cotto, and shane.
and it was disrespectful how they did Mayweather after the fight. but i guess that comes with being the bad guy in your sport.
Ok, there's always question marks about Khan's chin, but he did take some meaty hits from Kotelnik. Argue all you like about Kotelnik not being a power puncher but my argument is, he was still the naturally bigger opponent and still caught Khan quite hard. And Amir took those hots. I'm not saying Khan has the greatest chin to take on FMJ but he has the speed and strength to cause FMJ problems. And of course Warren would want the fight. Imagine the millions he'll earn from ticket sales etc. He wins regardless of Khan's result!
Poor Marquez was just simply a sacrificial lamb here for Mayweather come back. This must be lesson for Pacman to make sure proper rules are in place before agreeing for a catch weight fight with Mayweather so as not to repeat the outcome with Marquez.
For sure. Mayweather vs. Pacman is a trully block buster fight but. For Mayweather vs. Mosley fight? no money in this fight. No interest among boxing fans.
I am a Mayweather and Pacman fan but for FMJ vs Marquez fight, I admire Marquez for his ability and skills in fighting a taller and heavier opponent Mayweather despite his age disadvantage. Media should not give this victory a plus factor for Mayweather because he cheated for not complying with the catch weight of 144. A penalty of $600,000 that is only a fraction of what FMJ has gained in terms of the prize money that he earned and his market value for his future fight goes up aswell. Mayweather will do everything just to win this fight and he is willing to absorbed the monetary penalty for violating the weight limit if that is the only way. It is unfair for Marquez who is so honest to catch the weight ilint. In such case. Mayweather means (of cheating and violating) justifies the end (victory) which to me is totally unfair.
If the Boxing organization is trying to come up with another catch weight bout in the future, they should first come up with a rules and regulations that will severly penalize the boxers that goes out of an agreement. Victory for the fighters who violates the rules should not be recognized coz if the boxing organization will tolerate such practices, then it will a precedent to the future catch weight bouts (such as the Mayweather vs Pacman - I hope this will happen). In this case, it will not only detrimental for the boxing as a whole but also the boxers at the height and weight disadvantage.
Yah FMJ is bigger than the Pacman sadly the Pacman fights toe to toe while FMJ wants to run, duck, and throw some fast, strong punch. The fight would turn out to be a hiphop rather than a boxing Championship. No doubt they are both strong puncher.
