SEAT's Gabriele Tarquini took pole for this weekend's World Touring Car Championship meeting at Imola.
The Championship leader set a time of 1:55.530, 0.196 seconds quicker than Yvan Muller with Rickard Rydell completing a SEAT Sport 1-2-3.
Britain's Rob Huff, in the Chevrolet Cruze, was fourth at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari near Bologna.
Tiago Monterio took fifth spot followed by a pair of BMW cars, Augusto Farfus - second to Tarquini by one point in the standings - and former champion Andy Priaulx.
Despite making it into second qualifying, Alain Menu was absent due to engine problems and he will line up 20th on the grid after an overnight engine change.
Sergio Hernandez posted his best lap in the final seconds of Q1 but it was five hundredths too slow to make the top 10 with Joerg Mueller and Alex Zanardi other notable names that missed out on Q2.
Stefano D'Aste was the fastest Independent competitor and qualified 14th overall ahead of Felix Porteiro (16th) and Tom Coronel (17th).
Britain's James Thompson was the lead LADA and qualified 15th after sitting seventh until halfway.
