Owen settles pulsating derby

Sun, 20 Sep 16:20:33 2009

Michael Owen struck in the sixth minute of stoppage-time to give Manchester United a 4-3 victory in a staggering derby-day extravaganza at Old Trafford.

City thought they had grabbed a point when Craig Bellamy steered home their third leveller in the final minute. But up popped Owen, just as he said he would, with virtually the final kick of the game to leave the Blues on their knees.

United had taken the lead after just two minutes through Wayne Rooney, but a catastrophic error from Ben Foster allowed Carlos Tevez to set up Gareth Barry, who made it 1-1.

Darren Fletcher headed home a Ryan Giggs cross seven minutes after the break to put United ahead for a second time, but Bellamy equalised when he cut inside John O'Shea and fired home a sensational 20-yarder.

Fletcher then headed United ahead once again from a Giggs free-kick, only for Bellamy to level again in the final minute of normal time following a lazy misplaced pass from Rio Ferdinand.

The goal looked to have earned City a point, but with visiting manager Mark Hughes screaming for the final whistle, Owen latched onto a through-ball from the irrepressible Giggs before stabbing home the winner.

  1. I am sorry to say it but it appears to me that Ferdinand is just about finished. He does not read the game and the mistakes he is making in important games border on the ridiculous. Further, his pace has gone as demonstrated by being out-paced by Bellamy for City's third goal. I said a few weeks ago that United should have made a bid for Hangeland when the window was open. United will get burned unless SFA takes some action to address the situation.

  5. peter, re: point 1) the FA punished adebayour because his behaviour was unnacceptable and because of the vicious stamp on van persie re: point 2) there were initially 4 mins of added time - following bellamy's equaliser in added time the celebration used up 2 mins of the remaining time - as is normal this was added on, as was time for the substitution of carrick for anderson - and in all likelihood 30 seconds or so for given's lethargy in taking a goalkick. re: point 3) this doesnt make sense the FA HAS to balance the benefit from foreign imports against the lack of opportunities fro home-grown players. re: point 4) just because a team has lots of money and manages to attract a few greedy individuals from other clubs does not give it an automatic right to be in the top four. re: your idiotic contribution - try watching the game and understanding the rules as they stand - the middle-east sheikhs do not make the rules (yet, at least)

    FA is corrupt.......

    Why are they corrupt?

    1. They wanted Man U to win so they were keen to purnish Adebayor
    2. Referee played 7 minuntes of added time instead of 4 and the FA will accept the results
    3. FA does not want to see development in English soccer...hence silly rules about regulating the number of foreign playes whiles it is a fact that foreign players have contributed significantly to the success of EPL.
    4. They always want to see the top 4 (uncivilised thinking) always on top of the league, and no team is allowed to buy players, even if they have their own money.

  18. Owen ! Owen !! Owen !!!
    Fantastic goal......
Last week also I said Owen should be given a starting line up...
He is proving to Alex Ferguson he deserves to start the game.
He is capable of scoring tricky goals...
Rooney and Owen should be given start...
Thanks to Owen for saving the game...

Berbatov is also good but he misses too much and he is very thin and don't have any strength.....
Owen is far better then Berbatov.
He should be given the start along with Rooney.
I hope this gets into Alex Ferguson's head.

    Anyway Congratz to Man United.
You gotta win this season again.
