Liga - Villarreal beat Mallorca
Villarreal ran out 2-0 winners against Real Mallorca in what was an ultimately comfortable victory for the home side at El Madrigal.
Giuseppe Rossi grabbed the first early on with a cool finish, slotting between the goalkeeper's legs, while Nilmar settled it shortly after the restart when latching onto a through pass and rounding the stranded Dudu Aouate.
Villarreal dominated the game for large periods and were deserving winners, with Rossi alone having a number of chances to extend the score line.
The result lifts the Yellow Submarine out of the relegation zone following their first win of the season.
The first half was a pretty tame affair, the only memorable incident being the early goal scored by Rossi. It was an excellent strike, with the Italian putting the ball through the goalkeeper's legs from a tight angle after being played down the inside-left channel by Jose Catala.
Rossi should have scored as early as the second minute, but his shot from 12 yards was saved by Aouate's outstretched foot. The Villarreal front pair were making themselves a nuisance and it was Nilmar with the next opportunity after half an hour. He expertly brought down a high ball with his chest, but his attempt at a lob was too close to the keeper, who saved with ease.
The second half began much like the first. This time Nilmar scored early on after getting on to a wonderful Borja Valero through pass, rounding the keeper and slotting into an empty net.
Chances came and went for both sides, with Rossi having a golden opportunity after 70 minutes, but his left-footed strike from a tight angle was palmed away.
